Yep he is pushing for a State of Emergency to be declared which will probably happen. This of course gives him emergency powers with even more carte blanche to do what he will.

Most of the comments here are preoccupied with wrong topics. Erdogan couldn't care less about entering the EU. Neither does the public. That was 20 years ago. Erdogan has been using the west as the general scape goat in all imaginary attempts at undermining his power. Thus, the 50% who love him also hate the west.
The religious population of Turkey who voted for Erdogan is almost 50%. So the secular people who feel like a minority right now (like me) are about 40%. (Turkey's total population is ~80m)
The prime minister recently made an announcement saying that it is still a little bit cumbersome to acquire registered firearms for the people so they will be making it significantly easier soon. He's arming the religious 50% against the rest.
After the recent "victory" against the coup, the 50% has fallen further in love with Erdogan. Make no mistake, they will die for him.
From this point on, there are virtually no obstacles left for Erdogan to do whatever he wants with the country. He will most likely turn it into a second Iran.
What does this mean for us (the minority)? Either we have to start fleeing the country or there will be civil war. Without a doubt.

This extreme action from Erdogan is something that could turn out to be the start of ww3.

How would that happen? Which nations would take the side of Turkey? I'd say it would more than likely test NATO and eventually lead to its restructure or demise when it turns out the other NATO partners are not willing to support or agree with the Turkish government if it were to continue along its current path.

Turkey is effectively a dictatorship now, is that an accurate statement?

I can see the break up of NATO in its current form coming sooner rather than later. If Turkey goes full retard then it simply cant stay.

The uncertainty in the USA isn't helping matters, I wouldn't be at all surprised if we do end up with Trump in the White House, that alone could see the end of NATO as we know it. Trump is making noises about leaving the WTO and NATO.

An EU army is a terrible idea, but what is important is that at a European level (not EU) we have good communication between nation states. Keep the EU out of it because they have proven to be very dangerous in matters like these.

All that jazz

Perhaps interesting reading for some (aviation related matters during the coup) : http://uk.businessinsider.com/air-ops-during-turke...

I wondered why Erdogan's Gulfstream was using a THY callsign - makes sense now. Disguise yourself as a civilian passenger aircraft!

Has effectively been for some time, math rough increasing censorship and control of the media.

The next time someone voices an idea or opinion you don't agree with, or supports a political viewpoint you oppose, be grateful; that is the true nature of democracy and the alternative is what we see in Turkey.

We are potentially heading for WW1.2 in Turkey and the ME.

Yes correct although I would say the potential for WW1 / 2 scenario probably has more likelihood of being triggered in the SE Asia region (N Korea, China, the current tensions in that region on a number of fronts).

Sitting here in Istanbul trying to understand the exact implications of this "State of Emergency" on everyday life.
So far from what I can gather all it means is Erdogan has empowered himself to throw yet more people in jail and to fire any judges who find any of his targetted "enemies" not guilty.
On that basis I don't know why he bothered doing it (rhetorical comment by me).

I say "1.2" merely because of the situation in the ME at the outbreak of WW1 was similar.

I'm very sad for Turkey and the EU. It does make me grateful we have a media that, though heavily influenced and controlled by politics, money, corruption and big business, clearly - as their misreading of both the GE and Brexit attest - does not have control of the voting population. Yet.

The thing which saddens me is that, like WWI in retrospect, we can all see it happening and could really do with being really sober, boring and selfless about the whole thing. But instead we (and by "we", I mean just about everyone in Europe and the US) seem to be on a course which noone wants but which has an inertia of its own.

We need, and have needed, Erdogan to wind his neck in for a long time, but it's been politically impolite to tell him so so we can't. Maybe the idea of an EU army wasn't such a dumb one after all- if I were Merkel I'd be arming myself to the teeth and keeping it on Bulgaria and Greece.
Indeed, an inertia...very good way to put it.
The US will tolerate a great deal to keep their strongest ally in the area...until it becomes untenable, and by then it will be too late.

I thought the coup had ended...

I wouldn't be surprised if we found out that all this was staged in some way to do just what he's doing now - How long before any democratically held elections are put on hold for "public safety"?

That door was never open in the first place, It's a door with 35 locks. One lock was opened. They were in talks about what kind of key 17 other locks needed.

The door should never even have been a door in the first place.

The end result is exactly the same. You can go back and read about people panicking (or pretend to panic) about turkey's 70m population 'flooding' UK as a result of travel visas. It was bks then, it's bks now.
