From the same link; those 2 pilots who downed Russian jet detained, now they are looking into 'their links with Gulen'. Don't think it'll end up well for those 2. Scary times if you are there.

Yes, convenient time to sweep that mess under the rug.

The FC& O's advise regarding Turkey

https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/turkey

They seem rather laid back about things. Personally, there is no way I'm going to visit a country run by an autocratic thug.

I'm supposed to be flying out to Ankara via Istanbul for work in the next couple of weeks. I've spoken with some friends out there about the situation and they've advised to delay by about 2 weeks when they expect things to have returned to 'normal'.
Due to changes since I typed this original post, I think I'll leave it a month and then make a decision! frown

Someone has put up a video showing Erdogan and his PM at the time (who has also been replaced) declaring that they gave the direct order to fire on the Russian jet from just scant months ago because they thought it would increase their popularity at the time to be seen to be standing up to big bad Russia then comparing to another video from yesterday saying they think the coup conspirators shot it down.

Blatant blatant lies as and when it suits their purposes and yet the majority of the Turkish public are swallowing it hook, line and sinker. It really feels like they have somehow managed to hypnotise the majority of the country.

For the time being, they have control, because they have control of the internet, but it's very hard to create such a media vacuum. The backlash may eventually come.

Wish it would hurry up and get here then because the backlash has been overdue for about 10 years IMO. Apart from all the misery he is causing in Turkey, he is also pretty much scuppering my retirement plans. frown

^^^ That above makes me think - How long until the internet is curtailed for "safety against the oppressive coup masterminds who are still in 'hiding'" ?

They already regularly shutdown access to Facebook, twitter and youtube within Turkey at the drop of a hat whenever anything big kicks off to stop anti-government sentiment from being spread via social media.

Funnily enough though they all stayed up during the coup. scratchchin

They seemed quite efficient at sending texts to the whole population to take to the streets.

I've just been out for lunch with a Turkish friend.

Two texts were sent followed up by a live phone call with the same message.

Her brother, who's in Turkey, was asked where he was and why he wasn't on the streets as per the Presidents instruction. Rather scary.

And this is a democracy? confused

Now to caveat, I have no idea how legitimate these schools are or if it's a little like some of the faith schools in Birmingham that were found to have some appalling standards and practises, but it comes across of simply wanting to shut down all opposition?

You can now be arrested in Turkey for what you write on social media as one retired teacher has just found out when she was arrested and taken to a local court for insulting the president

This is spot on. I imagine it must be what being killed by a Boa Constrictor must feel like as it slowly squeezes the life out of it's victim. Unbelievably there are still masses of pro Erdogan supporters out in the streets on what they are calling "Democracy Watch" as they think they are protecting their country, what a joke.

It's one of the biggest reasons I am a massive proponent of travel. The people just need to step out of Turkey for a day to see real democracy in action, unfortunately they just don't know any better.

Oh goody. A hard-line Islamic nation led by a tyrannical nut case, who likes buying IS oil and killing Kurds that fight them, right on Europe's back lawn.

Just what the world needed at this moment in time.

I know, it's almost a gift-wrapped apocalypse, isn't it? What's more worrying is how the people are lapping up the propaganda and also how toothless international criticism appears.
