If this turns out to be another ISIS related incident, the backlash in Germany is going to be substantial.
Nope. The usual multi faith service and condemnation, world leaders standing together for a photo op, the guy that lights up London landmarks in the colours of the effected nations flag will get a bit more work, Facebook and ttter hashtags in sympathy, multiple Guardian articles on how nothing should change.

Early reports of Nice attack were 10 dead. Then 24. Then 50.

Hard to say yet where this one is going.

And German police routinely carry guns. When this happens here God knows how long until an armed response turns up. If it happens in Southampton or Bath or York or Preston will armed police even be in the same city?
There will be armed police on scene quickly in any city.
There are no armed police based in Oxford

Assuming it is who we think it is, it's just crazy, just about all other terrorist orgnisations had some vaguely realistic aims to justify carrying out atrocities... but do these fellas really think they're going to "win" and the whole world will just convert to their particular brand of Islam?
No, it's much worse than that. What they're attempting to do is to goad the "Romans" (the west, in their eyes) into a battle at the town of Dabiq in Syria. Such a battle will herald the beginning of the end times. Here's the relevant hadith.

The hadith said:
Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: The Last Hour would not come until the Romans would land at al-A'maq or in Dabiq. An army consisting of the best (soldiers) of the people of the earth at that time will come from Medina (to counteract them).

When they will arrange themselves in ranks, the Romans would say: Do not stand between us and those (Muslims) who took prisoners from amongst us. Let us fight with them; and the Muslims would say: Nay, by Allah, we would never get aside from you and from our brethren that you may fight them. They will then fight and a third (part) of the army would run away, whom Allah will never forgive. A third (part of the army). which would be constituted of excellent martyrs in Allah's eye, would be killed and the third who would never be put to trial would win and they would be conquerors of Constantinople.

And as they would be busy in distributing the spoils of war (amongst themselves) after hanging their swords by the olive trees, the Satan would cry: The Dajjal has taken your place among your family. They would then come out, but it would be of no avail. And when they would come to Syria, he would come out while they would be still preparing themselves for battle drawing up the ranks.

Certainly, the time of prayer shall come and then Jesus (peace be upon him) son of Mary would descend and would lead them in prayer. When the enemy of Allah would see him, it would (disappear) just as the salt dissolves itself in water and if he (Jesus) were not to confront them at all, even then it would dissolve completely, but Allah would kill them by his hand and he would show them their blood on his lance (the lance of Jesus Christ).

It'll be in the afternoon after they've been down the mosque for Friday Orders Prayers.

I don't wish to alarm anyone but in many areas ARV's are split to cover vast areas. It could easily be over 30 minutes before any police officer with a gun could be on scene. Imagine what damage unchallenged gunmen could do in 30 minutes. It doesn't bear thinking about really.

Oxford is a prime soft target, very busy and touristy with the armed police based in Bicester which is probably a good 20 minutes away! Ok there is probably an armed response unit closer on average but it's still a huge gamble

They will be quick, if my experience is anything to go by. All it took was for the firearms team to turn up at HQ and then drive the 40 miles to the location where a gunman was believed to be hiding. Luckily for the safety of the area, the location was surrounded by an unarmed, but very brave, police officer.

As you can imagine, the firearms team drove as quickly as the cars would take them. So they were quick.

That, of course, was in the days when, according to Cameron and May, we had a surplus of police by some 20%.

The problem is that our response to such a firearms incident would be by unarmed and unprotected police for some time.

In many continental countries the police are armed or regularly armed. Yet these occurrences happen without regard to the deterrent.

I'm not sure the answer is to arm every British Bobbie with an assault rifle. There is an argument that death rates are lowered if the gunman is not confronted by armed police officers. There are alternatives to mass arming, but not a vast selection with the present level of policing. Nor, come to that, at the pre 2010 level either.

If the gunman has fled then it is a case of move in to deal with the casualties.

What a terrible waste of life.
