Yahoo made $4.4bn loss in 2015 - I'm frankly amazed that it's worth so much!

Verizon will merge Yahoo's operating business with AOL, an even older internet dinosaur. Yahoo's holdings in Alibaba will remain with a much smaller Yahoo.

They are one of our large customers and we have noticed their business has been decreasing and they have been changing the way they manage their assets.

Im struggling to see how they are valued that highly? I have a Yahoo mail account which I hardly use but cant remember the last time I used their search engine.

I've actually started using Yahoo again after being annoyed with the decreasing usefulness of Google. I don't really see how they can lose money (though they obviousy can)- surely they just sell advertising space/clicks and subtract the cost of their servers? Or have they made a whole ton of tech aquisitions that have failed to pay off?

Apparently Yahoo have a portfolio of services which could be spun off. Personally I can think of better things to do with $5bn, but then Verizon don't really come across as the most forward-thinking, innovative company in the World.
