The speedo cable on my Mexico has failed and I'll need a new one.

Maybe a nieve question but are these fairly generic, or very much car specific? Mine has a flat blade at the gearbox end (early 5 speed ZF) and a plain square drive at the speedo end as below

The cable is 1.2m long.

I'm happy to go to Speedograph Richmond to have one made unless these are available generally off the shelf.

Any ideas?

Speedycables might be worth a try.

There's a fairly finite range of ends - that apart, it's down to length. There'll be something off-the-shelf that'll suit.

Can I suggest as a starter...

Ends look right, they'll be metric threads, and total length is almost bob-on. Burton are helpful people.

Definitely, send the pattern and they will fabricate a new correct cable, and the cost is reasonable.

Speedograph Richmond do the same, they've previously made me a new handbrake cable and their service was excellent and quick.

Yes, but Speedy Cables do not live up to their name. Many of us have waited months for service. Good work it is true, but my instruments took four months.

Have to say that it is 7/8 years since I last ordered from them, perhaps a case of another small company under the weight of to many orders perhaps. I don't know, but I am happy to know that at least two businesses are out there to help with our vintage and classic cars.

That's the same feedback I've heard before Lowdrag. Speedograph Richmond were excellent before so I've ordered a new speedo cable from their website. Hopefully it'll arrive nice and speedily thumbup

Just to update this thread.

My new speedo cable arrived this morning from Speedograph Richmond. Ordered Sunday off their website, arrived Wednesday morning. A nice speedy service from a good old fashioned business keeping our old cars on the road thumbup

A pedant, who has refrained from pointing out that it's Speedograph Richfield, would have thought you'd get it right after using their website etc.

Just a little update on this one, after fitting the replacement cable the speedo stopped working again after only 50 miles or so. The needle started bouncing, then clicking then nothing.... This time after taking out the speedometer the speedo drive was very stiff so the reason for the original cable failure wasn't the near 50 year old cable after all, it was the speedo unit itself.

The unit was packed off to Speedograph Richfield, they called next day to confirm receipt and confirm instructions which included a request to not restore the case, bezel or the dial, and to retain the mileage reading. It's just arrived in the post today looking very clean but not too new that it'll look out of place against the other instruments and 8 days from posting to receipt is pretty good service.

Hopefully I'll now have a working speedo again.

Mind if I ask how much? The speedo in my old Landy is very, VERY pessimistic. 30mph while the valves are bouncing in top.

Not at all. It was £55 plus postage and VAT, £74.34 all in. They do have some fixed-prices listed on their website and their full refurbishment would include new glass and plating to the case, but I didn't think that was too expensive given the relatively specialist nature of the works, or the potential cost of a replacement as an alternative.
