I'm a member of Seaview Yacht Club, so get over to the island a fair bit. It's a game of two halves; either genteel 60s throw-back full of affluent retirees or banjo-land chav. Very little in between.

The ones that amuse my parents are not the poor but people at the other end of the spectrum.

At certain times of year their village becomes packed with braying chaps in deck shoes and pink or red trousers....

My mum does a good impression:

"Oh are you going to Bunny's party at the yacht club?"

"Rather old chap, just had a refit on the 40 footer, bloody amazing, chaps a real craftsman and a bloody nice chap as well"

"Waaaaaaa wah wah wah super marvellous waaaaahhhh"
There is a threat level indicator for that:

Cliché central in this thread. Although the 'very little in between' seem rather apt following various posters comments...... smilesmile

Unfortunately I have to got there about 5 times a year for work, and every single time it's just a complete pain in the arse. 25 miles door to door from where I am in West Sussex and yet it always takes 2 hours or so and costs a fortune. No wonder the economy is fked. That the ferry companies are allowed to hold the population to ransom and always block plans for a bridge or tunnel is a disgrace. A permanent fixed link is needed, simple as.

I assume no bridge is to stop the inbreed mutants from swarming over to the mainland and infecting the rest of UK with the faulty genes lol

No perhaps its just the cost etc, assuming you get some form of education on the IOW and are aware of the mainland then surely you can consider a move to the mainland to find work.

It sounds like IOW is nice place if you are comfortably well off but if your poor its not so great thus perhaps the key is to promote mobility have firms advertise jobs on the main land and promote opportunities off the island. Come back when your older more secure etc.

It does not sound like a small Island is a good investment opportunity for firms so thus thoes on the island need to venture off it. Education of such opportunities might actualy be key

That an stop marrying your sisters

Have you ever been to Southampton or Portsmouth? If that was the intention it hasn't worked.

Interestingly (or not) there is a proposal that Portsmouth, Southampton and IOW councils join forces to become a super authority (Solent Council). As usual, despite it having limited support from the public the idea is gathering momentum.

How is the ferry to the IOW expensive at about £70

Where else can you get a trip in a time machine that takes you all the way back to 1950 in just 30 minutes for that sort of money?
West Cumbria. Makes the IOW look dynamic, progressive and desirable.

I grew up on the island and left there in my early twenties. Can't say I was ever aware of any real poverty and certainly not inbreeding.
I go back occasionally to visit friends and I always notice how old fashioned it still is. And how terrible the roads still are.

They have heard tales of people that live on the island that have never been to mainland...however these are very old folk.
My first job after leaving school was with Red Funnel. One of the old boys there, Dick Hopkins, was approaching retirement. Apparently he'd only ever been off the island for WW2.

Not surprised he never went back to the mainland then....people kept shooting at him!

Any person who passes judgement upon others resident village/town/city/island. generally suffer from a severe case of pomposity'itis. As in this case it reveals underneath a modest minded persons persona a seam of crudeness likely embedded within an unhappy childhood. Alternately just another dhead.
