I wonder if they are worried about the Ruskies and Ukraine having another tussle and there being an energy crisis of some sort?

Are we not talking about 10days?

Most of the UK residents could do without eating for 10days as they are mostly overweight. It would be doing us all a favour. Remaining supplies could be diverted to those that actually need it.
Raising the age old question of whether fat people starve faster than skinny people? biggrin

My friend did national service in Germany however he worked as a journalist for the government. I don't think it is purely service for the military?

I did read that the general "what to do in an emergency" plan hasn't been updated since 1995, so this could be a poorly handled/sensationalised bit of common sense..
This

Having two weeks of supplies should be common sense.

Not just due to terrorist threats either, what if there is another Flu Pandemic like the Spanish Flu?.
In a proper emergency the two weeks of food in the fridge and freezer wouldn't be worth a pile of stinking flesh though. You need canned and dried food, but even then if gas and electricity are off, how would you cook them in a modern flat with no fireplaces? The civilised world will collapse in double quick time if the power went off for any significant time - especially if it was because of an EMP strike. Try reading 'One Second After'
by William R. Forstchen.
Eat canned food cold. Maybe keep 2 weeks worth of BBQ briquettes?

Some of the recent terrorists had plans for a nuclear power station didn't they?

How much damage could they actually cause though? I'm no expert by any means but probably not a great deal. Well, short of flying a plane into one.

I doubt they could assault one - the Civil Nuclear Police have some very serious weaponry at their disposal!

In an effort to improve the German economy we are going to tell people to stockpile 10 days of food.
This should drive up consumer spending and get us out of the crapper.

All you really need is a .22 air rifle and plenty of ammo (and a fire starting tool).
There's plenty of pigeons, rabbits and other wildlife you can eat.
Build a campfire - cook said kill.
Boil river water etc.

Most people have enough food for 10 days in their homes. You would probably be eating pretty random stuff at the end of the 10 days, but you'd be fine. I don't think food is the problem - as someone has already said, most of the UKs population would be materially better off if they went without food for 10 days.

Water (clean water ) is much harder. If the water shut down, it all gets a bit desperate very quickly. You can disinfect water with a few drops of cheap bleach, if you can find the water. If you're near a river, fine, if not, you might have quite a walk.

Energy - would be a big problem in the winter. If the power goes off, then the internet is dead, you can't power heating systems and you get cold and bored quickly, especially if on a limited diet.

When we moved out of London, we seem to have become "preppers" by accident. I have space for loads of cars, so at any moment, I've probably got 400 litres of petrol "on site". Power cuts are frequent, so we have a big generator. Gas is in a big cylinder. Water is in a mahoosive rainwater tank we put in with the extension - mainly for flood control. Living a mile or so from the nearest shop means the store cupboard is bursting at the seams....

You'd have to be pretty accurate with the plane to take out whatever was taken out at Fukishima, hitting the reactor dead on won't do much...

This.
The fields where I live are full of rabbits and rats for that matter.
I can hear my wife and daughter now. "You rotten git".
I'd be banned to the summer house while they eat the cat and dog food and me and the four legged would be dining on other four leggeds.
What does fox taste like ?
They turn up 10:00 sharp every night for free sausages from the neighbours.

Come to think of it the summer house is full of huge spiders...... at least a days protein.
I better bring my .22 back from my German apartment.

I need to moved the red wine cabinet and the brandy down to the SH this weekend.

Actually, I could just stay where I am now in India.
I'd be suprised if they could make the water much worse than it already is.
No, I fancy some .22 action.

Could it be the Ruskies or the Islamists they're wary of?
Or could it be a conveniently timed bit of deflection to take the heat away from their immigration issues and to deter those that might be questioning the point of EU unity?
