1928/30 Stock market crash/depression
1935 on Large standing army builds up in Europe, purely for defence lead by a short chubby German
1939.... World War

2017 Large standing army is suggested purely for defence, most powerful leader is a short chubby German!!!

Wishful thinking don.
Why because we left or are leaving should the rest of Europe fall apart?
I have no idea why you asked me this question. Why because we left or are leaving should the rest of Europe fall apart?
I didn't suggest that the EU would fall apart because the UK is leaving.
The EU is falling apart because they are trying to integrate vastly different economies.

The E.U existed before the UK joined.
Errr... No, it didn't. The EU came into being in 1993.We joined the EEC in 1973.

One other reason that Britain would not want military integration with Europe is that we have the strongest military.
I think the French might take issue with that as their army, air force and navy are all significantly larger than ours, and don't exhibit the massive capability gaps and manpower shortfalls that we do. After all, they have carriers with jets on, maritime patrol aircraft, etc. The UK military are dangerously weak right now - all we're up to at the minute is fighting limited wars against opponents lacking in hardware.DamienB said:

I seem to remember a while back that they had a huge, supposedly impenetrable defensive line full of their army which was supposed to stop any aggressor??!!! I think the chubby German's tanks just drove round it??!!!From two tweets from Sky news
Update - Jean-Claude Juncker has proposed the creation of a European defence fund and says the EU must have HQ for a common military force
Update - European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker says lack of military co-opearation on resources is costing the EU "billions"
So basically he wants an EU army. I hope the Hq is called the Juncker Bunker

The E.U existed before the UK joined.
The EU was formed by the Maastricht Treaty in 1992.
We joined in 1973.
Juncker calling for the EU Army.
Some idiot said he didn't say the word 'ARMY'.
No.
He called for the EU to have the formation of a
common military force. 'We must have a European headquarters'.
Bit like the Japanese aircraft carrier that is not really an aircraft carrier
...because it has no aircraft on it!
Juncker looked like he wanted the ground to open and swallow him after Farage and Le Pen spoke.
No time for her, but she made good points about them (EU gits at helm) being more concerned about the Euro than the people.
The EU is now on a course to fall. Elections up-coming will provide the dynamite.
Well well - Farage was right again.
The remainders said there will never be an EU army stop telling lies. .... Hmm really. Seems to have turned out just as he said.
No trade agreement - well given our £ devaluation against the € actually WTO tariffs make it no more pricy to export to the EU than previously

Please stop taking comments out of context. The UK could never, ever, have been forced into an EU army against our will.
Now we are leaving the EU the remaining members may decide to form an EU army but that does not change the fact that if we had remained:
1. The EU could not create an army without our permission,
2. The UK could not have been forced into it.
In all honesty, an EU army may be essential for them if they're to keep things together. Not to protect the EU from outside but to protect members from other members and themselves.
It's clear that the majority of the EU population is dissatisfied with what the EU has 'achieved' and the direction it is headed in. How long before fingers are pointed and the demos begin earnest? Many member states won't be so passive as the UK; they won't sit for a referendum. That's when an EU army will be needed.
It seems that Juncker and his ilk are just shifting the deckchairs, fingers crossed, waiting for an economic miracle. It isn't going to happen.

Do you really believe that we would not have been dragged in one way or another?
Yes, for 2 obvious reasons.1. The EU doesn't have the power to create an army. It needs to be granted that power by the member states. The UK would have had to have granted the EU that power.
2. UK law prohibits the transfer of military power to the EU without a referendum result in favour of doing so.
We could have joined an EU army willingly as long as the UK PM, UK Parliament and UK public all agreed it was the thing to do. We couldn't be "dragged in" unwillingly.
