Difficult to judge by our standards as the problem could be unsolvable by the usual procedures. The president appears to have good intentions and is seemingly sick and tired of having his country ruined by drug dealers. Looking at his support levels, so is everybody else!

Will be very interesting to see how this pans out.

And again:

article said:
Duterte has faced condemnation from human rights campaigners, diplomats and the UN for inciting a war on drugs that, according to official figures published on Sunday, has led to 2,400 deaths in just two months.

The defiant Filipino leader has responded to critics with a string of outbursts, including labelling the US ambassador to Manila a “gay son of a we”, telling the Catholic church “don’t fk with me”, and accusing the UN of issuing “stting” statements about his anti-drugs policies.

Duterte was answering a reporter’s question on Monday about how he intended to explain the extrajudicial killings to Obama, before boarding a plane to Laos for the Association of South-east Asian Nations summit.

“You must be respectful. Do not just throw away questions and statements. Son of a we, I will curse you in that forum,” Duterte was quoted by as saying by Agence-France Presse. “We will be wallowing in the mud like pigs if you do that to me.”

To be fair to him, he's doing exactly what was in his manifesto.

We don't have any right to interfere in other peoples' democracies if they aren't threatening us IMO.

Portungina "son of a bh or son of a we" is an extreme curse in the Philippines, the problem with Duterte using it on Obama is that he was probably not aware of it's accuracy.

The world would be a better place if more governments told the catholic church to wind its neck in.

Obama has called off a meeting with President Duterte, apparently after being told via media that Duterte was prepared to repeat what he had said earlier when face-to-face with Obama - though Duterte now regrets the impact of his words, according to his office.

Well we wouldn't want anyone taking control of drugs and the gangs in their little tin pot country and eradicating the problem or reducing it to minimal levels.

That might just make a lot of very important people look rather silly and of course we can't have the end to the drug wars or else where will all that funding be spent?

as always though it is the 'small fry' who get targeted and killed - the 'Mr Bigs' will carry on with impunity

agreed. however, there is one particular catholic sect in the philippines that even duterte won't mess with. i cannot remember the name off hand, but the head of that particular group stated he could put 1 million people on the streets of manila at his command a few years back, then proceeded to do so.

the city basically had to shut down for a day. i think a public holiday was declared. apparently no senior politicians get elected in and around manila without this groups say so, so duterte may well have their blessing for what he is doing.

killing low level drug dealers and users may sound good to some, but in a previous role he had young kids killed for things like shoplifting food . the young child killed by a stray bullet mentioned above is not the only innocent person to have been caught up in one of his sanctioned assassinations .

politicians and senior civil servants in the philippines bleed the country dry. the sheer scale of corruption there is beyond the comprehension of most in the west. think people earning $600 a month with several hundred million in the bank, kids at the top schools in the states, and several overseas properties. duterte will be no different .

even when caught nothing is done. some just point blank refuse to turn up for trial, and if they pay the right people and are well connected, they will never see the inside of a courtroom. with trials lasting upwards of twenty years there would be no point anyway. the tough on crime stance is a whitewash exercise to placate the gullible while he empties the countries coffers.
