Another daily mail post taking points out of context.

The reason for that comment was due to the Catholic Church not liking Duturte coming to power, and the fact that Duturte has exposed them a number of times when it comes to underage shenanigans with minors and priests and the Catholic Church getting the priest out of jail.

He hasn’t said he is against god he has said that he is against the catholic version of god.

The papers have failed to convey the full context of issues.

As a point of note I’ve lived and worked in the Philippines for the last 6 years.
Fair enough - thanks for the clarification.

What's your view on the current overall popularity level of the President with nationals?

Well the upper middle class and beyond have a distaste for him, he upset the status quo removing a lot of people in positions of power that had become more than a little comfortable doing not a lot.

Whereas the majority left think he is great, this is what the elite hate. All that money and power in their lives but they cannot control the people outside of the cities, which accounts for the largest proportion of votes.

Edited to add - During his election a big part that made the everyday person vote was his determination to go after the elite oligarchs that owe the government billions in taxes but have never paid due to them being buddies with the previous administration. He has been successful in in the so far making the owner of Philippine Airlines pay along with a few others.

Another poster mentioned an organisation that can assemble 1M people on the streets on short notice? As long as I’ve been here and also asking SWMBO, there’s never been a rally/demonstration such as that.

During the last presidential election there were large rallies however the people in attendance were paid 500php to do so.

don't know what happened with the quote above, just seems to be quoting you that appears different to any other quote ?
i was getting my religious orgs mixed up. the organisation that regularly puts 1 million people on the streets is iglesia na cristo(an anglican based org). it is usually done in the guise of medical aid, but is done as a show of power. very little in and around the capital happens without their input or financing. seem to be in a bit of bother at the moment as the old man popped his clogs and his sons are fighting for control.
the main catholic based group are el shaddai, another org that has far reaching influence.

duterte is an animal. any politician that has to kill their own people to gain support is seriously lacking in all departments ,imo. the "drug" problem he is supposedly addressing is virtually non existent. every single western country has a drug problem multiple orders of magnitude greater than that of the philippines. there is a small problem with meth amphetamine apparently , funnily enough this comes into the country under the blessing of one of duterte's sons. no doubt as a result of the kickbacks he receives.

there is no such thing as a good politician/civil servant in the philippines. they are all on the take to a greater or lesser degree. the rich can do as they please as enough money buys you freedom from any meaningful sanction. their only worry is being executed by the police or army to steal their assets. it is a lovely country, nice people on the surface, but they are incredibly selfish when it comes to money and i would suggest the way politics is carried out there is a reflection of the population.

my family have a home in manila. i first visited 27 years ago. we have family members in senior civil service positions there(handy when you get stopped by the police and instead of a bribe just hand over a card that brings a terrified look and apologies) and several that are business owners so have a bit of background on the place and its workings.

Agree with this.

I like Duterte, and this is confirmed by the fact that the media seem to hate him smile Duterte's problem has always been his mouth. He is trying to break not just the power/control of the few families really running things (try setting up a business importing something like TVs or cars), but also the control the Catholic Church has on politics and the effect it has on people's lives. However, recently he has bad-mouthed God several times which isn't going down too well with many 'normal' people. He needs to be a bit more careful with his words to put real doubt in people's minds about the church IMO.

Understandably this latest action has its own thread, and it updates this one.

Probably no harm done to his approval rating given who is likely to own such metal.

"Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, December 5) — The President again lashed out at Catholic bishops and called them useless for criticizing his administration.

"Itong mga obispo ninyo, patayin ninyo. Walang silbi yang mga g***ng yan. All they do is criticize," President Rodrigo Duterte said in a speech at an event in Malacañang on Wednesday.

[Translation: Your bishops, kill them. These b******s serve no purpose. All they do is criticize.]

In a later speech during the awarding of the country's top overseas Filipino workers (OFW), Duterte said the Catholic Church was the most hypocritical institution, and that majority of priests are gay."

Well when you see how often the priests and other god botherers are found messing with the alter boys, you can see why his comment isn't so far fetched.

This guy would make Trump blush.

“The president of the Philippines told a crowd in Japan he used to be gay but was cured by 'beautiful women' - before inviting four women on stage to kiss him.

President Rodrigo Duterte, 74, began his speech on Thursday by telling the crowd his critic Senator Antonio Trillanes IV was 'similar' to him because they were both gay.

But, he said, he had actually been 'cured' by beautiful women and 'became a man again' when he married his first wife Elizabeth Zimmerman, according to CNN Philipines.”

4 years on and he’s still flying high in the polls.

https://thediplomat.com/2020/10/why-is-rodrigo-dut...

“ The recent news that Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte currently enjoys a 91 percent approval rating, even as his government battles a series of scandals, continues to astound many observers.

Since announcing his intent to run for president in 2015, and ever since his election victory the following year, Duterte has consistently enjoyed high ratings. It should therefore not come as a surprise to get yet another report about Duterte’s popularity. But a 91 percent score can only be seen as astoundingly high for a presidency that has so far failed to fulfill its avowed priorities, such as ending the drug menace and adopting a federal form of government. Duterte’s rating is even higher compared to other Asian leaders whose governments have been better able to curb the spread of COVID-19 in their respective countries.”
