I'm local, and can't believe that these are 'normal' drowning incidents. The beach is as safe as they come - especially on a day like yesterday with hardly any wind.

No families reporting missing people, no personal effects left on the beach, no cars or motorbikes unaccounted for, etc.

And people complaining about a lack of life guards - I think that some of the 25,000 people on the beach would have noticed people in trouble anyway.

Whatever happened, it's a terrible way to go.

Now is a good time to post this, a very useful bit of advice on what to do if you or your family are caught in a rip.

The first thing that springs to your mind when it is reported at the time that two swimmers have drowned on an extremely popular beach on the hottest day of the year during the summer holidays subsequent to numerous other drowning accidents around the coast in the previous several days is this must be failed immigrant crossings. Contrary to Police announcements at the time that there was no evidence of this?

I would have thought "far and away, probably, the most likely explanation" would have been a sad case of day trippers drowning.

Maybe when more light is shone on the case it might turn out to be immigrants attempting to enter the UK drowning. That would be remarkable.

Anyway, off to work...
The first I saw of this was "Three men pulled from sea and now dead, all separate incidents, 20-30 minutes apart."

My Occamometer swung towards "Immigrants".

Fully clothed, no id.

Surely they were just modestly dressed Muslims going for a swim ? Nobody would take their purse / wallet into the water......

I know it appears unlikely now, but I know some fishermen who have caught Portuguese Manowar and Lions mane in their nets this summer off the coast of Ireland.

Both potentially lethal.

ITV reporter Mark Williams-Thomas says on Twitter https://twitter.com/mwilliamsthomas that the men have been identified..

They were 5 Sri-Lankans who had driven to the beach for a day out. Weren't fully clothed and was simply a tragic accident.

Official statement from Sussex Police ( http://www.sussex.police.uk/news/five-men-died-at-... )

Police said:
Five men were pulled from water at Camber Sands on Wednesday (August 24).

All five men, despite the efforts to save them, sadly died at the scene.

Chief Superintendent Di Roskilly said: "We believe we now know who the men are and that they came to the beach together for the day. We believe they are all in their late teens and early 20s and come from the Greater London area. These men were not fully clothed when they were pulled from the sea but wearing clothes appropriate for being at the beach for the day.

"We have no further reports of anyone else missing from Camber and there are no on-going searches related to this incident.

"This has been an incredibly tragic incident and we are offering their next of kin support at this difficult time and our thoughts are with them."

Emergency services were called to the beach at 2.10pm to reports of a person in the sea. While they were on scene another person was seen in difficulty at 2.20pm and 15 minutes later a third person was rescued. The bodies of a further two men were found in the water between 8.15pm and 8.45pm.

If that's the case then it's another example of the utter crap that is put out by the media. Where did they get the 'fully clothed' story from and why publish without corroborating. Madness.

Seeing what the Telegraph did in regards to the F50 crash thread, they probably picked up some duff info from a discussion forum.

Strange case.

Hard to see five people dying from jelly fish bites in one hit. Australia has had 4 deathsthis century from jelly fish stings and it's entire northern coast is awash with either box jelly fish or irukandji for half the year. True they are more cautious and geared up for it but aa I understand it you normally need a good dose and a bad reaction, and even then it's mostly small children or elderly people or those with a pre-existing condition.

Very sad. How all 5 can get into difficulty at Camber Sands, used to swim in the sea there as a kid loads. Don't think it is even a spot to get many rips is it? Guess if there was a sand shelf or something that could give way quickly.

Despite the hot weather the sea is still quite cold out of the shallows, probably about 18 degrees which is quite cold if you are not used to it. I swim OW a lot and would wear at wetsuit at that temp.

What makes you think it was jellyfish - there's been nothing official said about that being the cause. The only sources of those claims are the same place the fully clothed claims came from.

Never thought it was jellyfish. I just noticed some speculation about that and I knew off hand that fatalities were pretty rare in Australia so looked up the stats and thought I would share.
