ITV reporter Mark Williams-Thomas says on Twitter https://twitter.com/mwilliamsthomas that the men have been identified..

They were 5 Sri-Lankans who had driven to the beach for a day out. Weren't fully clothed and was simply a tragic accident.
If that's the case then it's another example of the utter crap that is put out by the media.
And the thick currents on here , the sea is lethal and kills people ( shock horror ) .

I'm unsure just why making a logical assumption that these poor chaps were migrants would mean that people "need to have a word with yourselves".

In this day and age five men washing up on the beach in the south of England - I'll stick my neck out and say it's a fairly high probability; incorrect as it turns out. Nothing "racist" about it, even though you might want to twist it that way.

It's not a logical assumption though. It's paranoid, Daily Mail-esque kneejerk posts based on a couple of pieces of hearsay and rumour, that they were trying to float across from Europe to enjoy our free milk and honey.

You say "in this day and age", I can't remember the last time I heard about a boat load of immigrants washing up on the beach. If they were found in the back of a truck, or flattened at the entrance to the A14 services then yes I would agree it is likely to be an immigrant, but they're not sending across flotillas yet.

Tragic. Caught out by tides and sand banks possibly?

But that's the point..."yet".

The chances are that it will happen sooner or later. No one will be surprised when it does. Because no one will be surprised demonstrates that it was a perfectly reasonable conclusion to arrive at. The fact that it was wrong doesn't change that, nor does arriving at such a conclusion make someone a racist.

Based on early reports of 5 young men of Asian appearance being washed up on a beach fully clothed, it is no surprise that some came to the assumption (apparently wrongly) that the 5 men were illegal immigrants.

You don't have to look far to find reports of illegal immigrants coming across the channel in some form of craft do you:

Whilst living in Dubai in the 80's there were plenty of Asians who were working in the UAE who would routinely go to the beach in groups of young men. They also would paddle/wade/swim in fairly shallow water enjoying themselves. I think in three years we had 3 drowning but there was the odd current which could catch you out.

I expect we will find out they couldn't swim, plenty of people have panicked in waist deep water and instead of standing up have simply drowned.

Tragic loss of life.

I know in some cultures swimming isnt routinely taught, I have read that 50 percent of Black British people cant swim and in certain parts of America that is higher.

I think I read these guys were Somalis, not sure whether Somalian people are big on swimming but if they lived in London, they may never have been to the sea.

As has been said, Camber sands is popular and safe, no lifeguard but generally it doesnt seem like it needs it most of the time.

You missed the stories about the 18 migrants, inc 2 kids, on the Kent coast, and others further round the Essex coast then?
Here's one link to refresh you.
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/jun/04/fear...

And back to the story in hand... even the police reports yesterday told us very little. Yet just hours later they not only know where they were from, they know they were Sri-Lankans from London, and to be honest, they actually 'know' exactly who they were - how else do you suppose their next of kin has been advised!

What is a mystery, unless it's to do with the riptide, is how the hell can not one, not two, not three, not four, but five (possibly six? seems they've given up on him) can all die together in the calm of a south coast sea, where at the same time the same sea was full of loads of other swimmers. But then they do call it the cruel sea.

The other puzzle is why not one report uses the word 'drowned'. Each report says they 'died'. Perhaps they've forgotten to mention that's how they died?

Maybe they're waiting for the results of an autopsy or 5 before announcing a cause of death? I know that goes against the thought processes of some on here to wait for evidence before leaping to conclusions...

Perhaps an autopsy hasn't been carried out yet, hence died. Will probably be changed to drowning unless they all ate or drank something which disagreed with them.

I expect being surrounded by swimmers as a non-swimmer in such apparently benign surroundings may well have led to them feeling safe; six death is certainly very strange.

True.
But like you started with a query 'Maybe...?', I ended with one.

Normally that would have been said, ie 'we don't know how they died, the autopsies will tell us.'

It's all speculation. Is that next, a ban on speculation? We all keep quiet until the full story is known?
