So if no one's reported the child missing and the driver of the van they were supposedly bundled into has been ruled out of the Police enquiries surely it must be a case of the person who reported it making it up or embellishing what they actually saw?

It could be as simple a kid jumping out for a wee in the alley/stairway next to the discarded bike and then jumping back in to to van/people carrier.

Or traveler's child steals bike, dad picks him up in the stolen van as he's late for a fight and some do gooder reports the event as an abduction as bike is left behind and there was probably lots of swearing.

I think this is the most likely scenario, other than the fact that the pedant in me would want two ls in 'traveller'.

I reckon travellers/gypsies/s. A few bikes were stolen from my area, we saw the kids plating with them for 5 mins before their dad (I assume thats who ge was, as he called two of them by name) turned up, gave them all a smack and bundled them into a big Toyota Hilux. On a silent cctv recording it would have looked pretty bad.

I was I guess thinking along similar lines - 'best' case, it's a member of the kids family but they're a bit off the grid, don't watch the news, no interest in speaking to the fuzz even to reassure them etc - or worst case this is a neglected kid and whoever should have reported him missing will be waking up with a hangover in the next few hours. frown

Probably the same abductors as the ones who tried it on with the squaddie in Suffolk.

That didn't happen either.

Here's hoping. Irresponsible as fk if it is a prank but much better than most of the alternative explanations.

Is driving a car on the public road with someone in the boot not an offence in itself? I doubt they had a proper seat and seatbelt in there.

I've seen folk being done for riding in the back of a van.

Local pub owner moved the bike close to some bins two days ago as it had been dumped outside his pub according to twitter.

Just to add, as nobody else has to date, and making this so-called abduction even more odd, the bike has been ruled out too!

It is very weird. I'm wondering exactly what they're going on that has them continuing to think that this was a real incident of some kind; I thought CCTV coverage round there would be good enough that tracing the van would be… if not easy then at least possible.

Mind you I wouldn't want to be the copper making the call to stand down a search for a six year old, even a possibly made up one, either.

Must be hard searching for someone that isn't missing though? They have a bike that wasn't his and video of a van that wasn't the abductors.

What happened there?

Were "the attackers" of the airman never found?

I believe there may not have been any attackers.

Lets just say in future it will be known as a "Ryan Lochte" incident.
