I must confess I really don't understand why people see a black person, a white person, an orange person (well, if in Essex or Chesire). Why not just a person?

Me neither. Does that make us colour blind? smile

surely the same reason they see a fat/short/bald/ginger/etc person - it's an easy/lazy label to hang on people?

There's something quite distasteful about children being caught up in all this.

It's human nature, we're a social animal that evolved in relatively small social groups and feared other social groups for good reason.

Like all our instincts, they're stronger in some than others and we can mitigate them by using our intellect, but the instincts are still there.

Pretend to be them, get involved with whatever it is you admire them for, put posters of them on your wall, dress like them. Just don't paint your skin to look like theirs, is it really so hard?
You really are an absolute arse aren't you?

Having spoken to a few of my black friends about this since it aired last week they are more bothered by the fact people think this would offend them than anything else. AS far as they are concerned a young white lad idolising a black sportsman so much that he wants to go to that much effort to look like him for a day has nothing but positive connotations.

I also mentioned people likening it to 'blackface', the response was '"whoever said that clearly doesn't know why blackface is offensive".

Quite why you seem so determined to be offended on behalf of people who apparently aren't is beyond me.

You know she has had to put up with being called Mud face at school , The "N" - "Why are you here" & the one the made her laugh the most at how thick these people are was "Go home P**i"

Not great, but she is a well balanced & imo, a mature thinking young lady. To much time worrying over nothing....we even had one mother complain to a teacher that my Daughter had played Mary in the Christmas school play the past two times & in her view it was because she is black ??? The teacher told us she replied "No its because she is the best singer in this year" Lol

If you want to worry then do so ,my advice as a member of a mixed race family, just enjoy your life & ignore it all...
The kind of well thought out and balanced post that is always a joy to read. Whilst it disgusts me that such a beautiful girl should have to put up with that kind of abuse in this day and age, it's unfortunately not a surprise. Bigoted fkwittery does seem to be as rife as ever.

In many cases I'd agree but here I think it's more of an insight into the current trend of people being continually offended on behalf of other people. I've never been able to get my head around it as a concept TBH.

I don't think so, am I?

I have said several times that I'm not offended, professionally or otherwise. I'm sure I could also find/make up anecdotal evidence that this is offensive if I had the inclination. As I said earlier the source of my bemusement was the attitude of the people in the thread rather than the story that started it.

Just thought I'd throw this in as our family Golly is many decades old and a much cherished toy, especially by my 83yr old mother.

Whereas the source of everyone else's bemusement appears to be your attitude? Might be worth giving that some thought perhaps?

Please do find/make up some anecdotal evidence as you put it as I imagine finding statistical evidence for this kind of thing would prove challenging TBH. I'm happy going with the views of the balanced and intelligent people in my circle of friends that this should, according to you, offend.

The South Park episode with the "racist" flag demonstrates this issue perfectly if anyone knows it or wants to check it out.

Essentially, if you want to see racism in something then it's quite likely you're going to find it, even if it's not actually there.

As I said before, racism is in the eye of the beholder.

Have a listen to Morgan Freeman's take on it.

This was incredibly sad for me.

The kid clearly is utterly unaware of race issues.

Young child gets abused for trying to look like his hero.

Nic "whateverHisNameIs" should be thouroughly ashamed of himself. He is a wealthy man who has abused a poor young boy. Why?

Never met a geisha? Or a mime? Or a clown?

White face has never been used to subjucate a race on a national or global level.
If you feel its double standards then good luck to you.

In both the children are innocent
In one the mother is a racist bh

..in my view

nice reasoned viewpoint there - you may well be correct, but then again you may well also be totally shy of the mark. Isn't that a bit of an assumption because your views don't agree?
