If a kid wants to look like his / her hero, then they need to, erm, look like his / her hero.

How can a white kid, look like their black hero without adjusting the appearance of their skin? It doesn't work.

GOT IT

Kid should be told not to like / admire black people, yeah, that'll do it.

It's pretty misguided of the mother to think it's acceptable.
What's unacceptable about it?

I'm genuinely at a loss to understand what people are getting upset about, perhaps you could explain?

It's historically been used to ridicule and humiliate people of colour. While in this instance it has been used to try and pay tribute, that doesn't take away the negative connotation.

Do you think that if he'd worn the strip and the wig with out blacking up, people would've mistaken the kid for all the white dreadlocked players on the team?

I'm not saying the mum is a racist but it shows pretty poor judgement.

That's stretching the comparison way too far, IMO. I'd see your point if he'd been made up as a minstrel, but he hadn't - he'd just darkened his skin and put a wig on to look more like his idol.

Do you think that Robert Downey Jr was being racist in Tropic Thunder?

Might be worth pointing out that he was nominated for an Oscar for his performance.

Surely it does? By definition.

Young people would not see it as negative as they have no concept of "blacking up" its completely alien.

I would agree on poor judgement though, but in a way that practically anything offends people so posting anything on social media is always a potentially risky move.

Reminds me of the Ellen meme recently with Usain Bolt. Why not save the vitriol for the actual racists?

Does it? Or does it only appear as poor judgement to those who hold such connotations?

How would you explain to the kid that he can't appear black, because some people will think it's bad, without then creating racial concerns for the kid? If racism is to be removed from this planet, then we need to allow kids to be innocent, anything else is just furthering the problem.

Is there anyone but me that reckons that were this lad a "insert PC term of the week for not white" attempting dress up as any old football player that wasn't "insert..." then nobody would have batted an eyelid?

FFS, get a grip people and move on, by perpetually going on about the sins of the fathers you are being racist in your own right. rolleyes

Nonsense, just pretending that racism isn't a thing anymore isn't going to fix anything. If it were my kid I'd explain why blackface isn't acceptable and move on.

There are good reasons why something aren't socially acceptable, teaching kids what those things are and why is part of a parents job.

So in this case, because of the context, it was ok for a white man to black up?

So we are saying that blacking up isn't always racist and sometimes it's ok? I would suggest a child emulating his hero is the same.

The blacking up in the movie was racist, that joke was about Hollywood always casting white actors in films regardless of the character's race which is also racist. Blacking up is racist, but that's not the same as saying the people in this story are racist. I'd hope they were just a bit misguided as I said.

Agreed.

I've never heard of blacking up, so if my kids decided to do it, the connotation would have passed me by.

What this will highlight to the kid is that black and white people are different, and it's not ok to emulate your hero.

No I'm not, is this where I get accused of being a professionally offended SJW? laugh

Note that I've never said that I'm offended or called the mum racist. It's more bemusement at this place's defending of blackface.

Surly racism is the meaning behind the action not the action itself? If this kid wanted to dress up like his hero then there is no racism in that act.

If the same kid blacked up to bully a black kid that is racism.

Same as the name of the dam busters dog. If I walked up to a black guy and said it i would get a swift right hook if another black fella said it it is fine. Same action, one is racist and one is not.

Hopefully no one is defending black face. The defence is of a white child wanting to dress up like his black hero.

I'm confused. Do you think it was unacceptable for RDJ to black up in Tropic Thunder?

How though? What's the non-racist way of saying "You're white kid, your hero is black, so you can't dress up like him as it will upset other people"?
