Looks like we are building a wall.

"Construction is soon to begin on a "big new wall" in Calais following a surge in the number migrants trying to get across the Channel, the Government has announced.

The 13ft (4m) concrete barrier will be funded by Britain, at a cost of £2m, and will stretch over a half a mile (1km) along the main dual carriageway approaching the ferry port. Work is expected to begin as soon as this month"

Why will this not simply shift the problem 1km down the road to the end of the wall?

FFS.

and some people still laughing at Trump
silly
Apples and pears...
One is promising to build a concrete border to stop migrants crossing it.
The other case is to stop migrants crossing a busy carriageway, putting hauliers, tourists and themselves in danger.

France could easily end this by tagging those who encroach onto the highways with smart water then a week later sending the army in and removing them back to their country of origin.
But that the issue - they'll give the CoO as somewhere where they can't be deported to (war zone/gayness/whatever) and with no passport there's no way of proving it frown

Rather than building a wall along the road, why not build the wall around the jungle?

If you want a piss-boiler go onto google maps and zoom in on The Jungle - there are some little blue circles and these hop onto those 360 degree photos of various places in the place.

There are quite a few cars on there and european people working on building the place with power tools, 4x4 with a trailer etc etc. Almost all of the vehicles are on British plates. Bloody do-gooder idiots.

There was a post on FB recently asking people to go and help round up the dumped tents left after the Leeds festival so they could, among other things, be sent to Calais for the refugees.

It sounds awful and callous to say it - these are fellow human beings, fathers and sons - but it shouldn't be encouraged.

And yet the obvious solution is so simple, and free rolleyes

STOP AID TO THE PEOPLE LIVING IN 'THE JUNGLE'...FFS.

Just stop dishing out free food, water, clothing, advice, shelter and god knows what else - it really is that simple. The problem will eventually go away, or at least disperse.

While we are at it perhaps we could ask the Italians to stop providing a free ferry service across the med...

If France is blaming Britian then the Italians need to take some responsibility here too, not saying they should take the brunt but in some cases they are ferrying across several thousand in one day

The only way a wall would work if it was a hundred foot tall and completely surrounded the camp with no doors in it.
Reminds me of a joke:

And Englishman, an Irishman and a Frenchman are all on a plane that is going crash, and there is only one parachute - As the three men grab for the parachute, a genie appears from it and tells them they are all going to die, but may have one wish each before they go.

The Frenchman immediately stands up and says "If I am going to die, I would like to save my French countrymen from these people" whilst looking disgustingly at the Englishman continues "I would like a wall built all the way around France that is 500ft high with no doors, where is impossible for anyone to get in, and nobody can get out"

"Done" says the genie.

The Irishman shrugs his shoulders and asks that every Irishman in the world will always have access to a bottle of whisky

"Done" says the genie.

The Englishman looks over at the Frenchman with a rye smile and says to the genie "About that wall just built around France for Claude over there"

"Yes" says the genie

"Are you 100% sure nobody can get in, and nobody can get out?" asks the Englishman

The genie looks at him a little put out by the question and replies "of course, I'm 100% certain"

"Great" says the Englishman "Then can you fill it with water"

Building a wall 1km long is going to stop people getting to the UK? as someone in the South East and running a transport company with our drivers experiencing it all, it's simply a tragic waste of money.

These people travel from Iraq / Iran etc etc etc etc etc all the way to Northern France without a problem, a little wall will do nothing, just gives them something to graffiti on!

Why would you risk your 20 day old childs life when you were in a country like France?!

Just when will all this stop....I presume they were sent back to France for entering illegally?

No matter how much money the UK throws at Calais to fix the migrant problem, it won't end it.

This is a problem the French have made for themselves. Where they should have dealt with the migrants on day one, they didn't. They housed them rather than deported them.
Deported them to where?

I agree, it is a pathetic token gesture; not even a sticking plaster, but a white elephant.

The threat of deportation and the consequences of attempted illegal entry - i.e. it must result in a permanent exclusion from citizenship to work - have to be established.

I too have heard a similar joke but the butt of the gentlemans ire was the city of Bradford.

Claimed country of origin. I bet there would be fewer "Syrians" if they knew a failed application would mean a seat on the first flight back there
