I'd take issue with "we - us in Europe" are to blame, the blame clearly lies with the French government.
The fact that the French Govt continue to ignore the worsening situation in Calais is as unbelievable to us as it is to the French authorities in Calais, and the residents.
Not entirely, the way in which the UK is perceived as a soft touch, a land of milk and honey is certainly instrumental. The fact that the French Govt continue to ignore the worsening situation in Calais is as unbelievable to us as it is to the French authorities in Calais, and the residents.

The issues for citizens of Calais are just collatoral damage in the bigger picture.

This is ridiculous. Surely we can do something more than simply accepting that France has lost control of Calais? Could our police or military assist them with manpower? Jointly built detention centre?
It's surely very clear to anyone of any half way reasonable political persuasion that you can't allow and reward such flagrant disregard for the law?

We could give the perception of not taking them in by deporting them instantly, some were picked up in the channel yesterday or the day before... Taken straight back to France and dropped off? No, theyre no doubt in a immigration centre somewhere awaiting their first benfits cheque.
Exactly - they don't even need to reach the UK now. Same issue as in the Med. Start flapping around and shouting SOS and you're in.

That's harsh. Once they get to the UK they can get their families in and pick up benefits 50 times the average wage in Syria or Afganistan, and work on the side without any real comeback. The UK is the problem, not France. This has been going on for YEARS at Calais, at least 7 years, as I used to travel though their in a car a LOT up to 4 years ago. I've had to avoid people trying to flag down cars and trucks, had a pram pushed out in from of the car when doing 130kmh, had bricks thrown at the car, had a guy open the boot of my car when traffic was stopped due to a distraction up front, and driven into an "Aire" to interrupt a group of guys mugging and robbing a Spanish guy in his motorhome.
When we has the "Calais migrant thread" some of us were trying to tell the lefty apologist usual suspects with their heads up their arses / in the sand, that st like this was going on what, 30 miles from our shores, and we were branded racists and scaremongers, by the sort of tts that haven't been out of the borough never mind travelled the length and breadth of Europe by vehicle, as do the victims of st like this.
Finally, we are starting to see some coverage of it in the mainstream lefty news. But of course the angle is the "evil traffickers" and the migrants are "victims". They cannot fking help themselves, BBC s.

I've driven through the tunnel and used the ferries across the Channel around seven-eight times a year for the last two decades, certainly 100+ journeys. NOT ONCE have I seen anything such as you describe. None of my family or friends, who also travel extensively on the same stretch, have ever reported anything like this. You're either astonishingly unlucky or (and this is just a possibility) you're making it up. I have, however, had bricks thrown at my car in Birmingham, and been mugged in London

The UK is the problem, not France. Now, whether the above upsets any folk I'm not too fussed. What I have written is what many 100,000's if not millions of Europeans think but are afraid to state. 12-24 months of hard line ship them out policy would clear most European countries. As an end note, Hollande will not take this type of action as 1. he's simply too soft, and 2. he's happy to leave this stty situation to whomever replaces him next year.
And the problem is that no PM or President needs to do any real sorting out because they only serve a few years and then its a nice retirement with lots of cushy board appointments and barrels of cash to look forward to,
The ruling class love the status quo and don't want it to change, nor could they as that would entail caring and doing some work.
Couple all that with some of them harbouring a desire to redistribute the worlds wealth and you have the present situation.

If you take the early morning ferries and many professional drivers do, then it IS common. I've found shenanigans going on about 1 in 10 times I've used the early morning ferries, and of late, sadly, it is even starting to get a bit dodgy around Dunkirk. I have, however, had bricks thrown at my car in Birmingham, and been mugged in London
The trouble is that unless it is something new tactic wise, or video'd, etc, or indeed if say a motorist or trucker speeds up and drives at the tts trying to make them stop, professional drivers just don't report it as they can land themselves in lots more bother.
And the "aire de" robberies have been going on for donkeys years, French plod even started closing them in high risk areas because of the issue. Although in my experience, it was worse when Sandgate was open.
At peak times and most of the time at night or early am, it's fairly safe, but if
you go though the ports once or twice a week as some do, then what is mentioned here is no surprise at all!

It comes to something when the BBC are posting up "WTF" style video clips. Of course we've all seen this before, but I think the issue is becoming very much front and centre of the immigration debate in the UK mainstream.
IMHO, the camps should never have been allowed to establish and the expectation of swift and easy transit to a land of benefits and welfare should have been quashed a long time ago. We want immigrants, we need immigrants, but not arriving like this. It is anarchy, it is uncivilised and it is putting UK citizens and visitors in peril.

We want, need, those who come to take a place in Britain and, when they can, contribute to our society, together - happy to provide refuge to the Stateless, dis-posessed and refugees in need.
But not to be mugged by those in search of handouts.

A real WTF video from the so called Bbc there. Must be bloody stressful for truckers who have to pass through such roads. You would think the French would have sorted this camp out by now - the people in there are either asylum seekers in which case they should be entered within the system and sent to other places in France or they are illegal immigrants who should be deported.
Dithering over the issue and not taking any action is just encouraging more people to come to Calais.

I spoke to an acquaintance last week. He told me that when his group were coming bombing along the motorway for the early ferry there were people just wandering all over the place. He said it was a real WTF moment and not what you want at those speeds.
I fear there may be fatalities soon.
