Turkey USED to be an alley, when it was a functioning, secular democracy. Now it's a repressive, violent dictatorship with tens of thousands held without trial. As long as Erdogan rules it has no place in NATO. He levelled Kurdish cities in Turkey. We can only hope that one day there's a real coup, instead of the fake one that took place recently.

I don't think being a functioning, secular, democracy was ever an essential criteria in choosing our allies. For example, look what the Saudis are up to in Yemen (with UK-supplied weaponry).
