Police officers call for Notting Hill carnival review after record arrests

chairman of the Police Federation said:
Last year we had an officer stabbed. This year colleagues were assaulted, abused and spat at. How can that be right? It’s completely and utterly unacceptable.

‘The Glastonbury music festival had 40 arrests this year. Notting Hill had 10 times that amount.

‘Year after year there are such high levels of violence against police officers and the public at the carnival. And yet year after year nothing changes. Something needs to be done

That's a point. Annual stabbings as well as the drug dealing, litter etc. Nice. Political Correctness perhaps?

Just read Clarkson's ST article "It's Notting Hell, but don't stop the carnival, officer" from last Sunday 4/9. Living on the outskirts he says it was hell over the carnival weekend - running street fights, continuous noise, etc. but he seems to feel it should remain.

Still can't help feeling that if the organiser's were held finacially responsible (they's post a non-returnable bond against penalties/fines) things would greatly improve (or they'd run scared cancelling it!) scratchchin

It's that time of year again.

Police will use facial recognition software to scan the faces of tens of thousands of revellers at this year’s Notting Hill carnival even though civil liberties groups believe such an action would be discriminatory. The Metropolitan police has described the planned deployment as a pilot project intended to look for suspected troublemakers to keep those attending safe. But critics say the use of real-time biometric tracking has no basis in law and that the plan to deploy it during the carnival is institutionally racist, as it targets Britain’s main annual African-Caribbean celebration.

Guardian said:
In a statement explaining its plans, the Met said: “The technology involves the use of overt cameras which scan the faces of those passing by and flag up potential matches against a database of custody images. The database will be populated with images of individuals who are forbidden from attending carnival, as well as individuals wanted by police.”

The Met trialled the system last year, but it failed to pick out any suspects. Facial recognition technology is improving rapidly and the force believes it has the potential to provide a powerful new tool to law enforcement. Only images that come up as a match with a wanted offender will be retained by police, the Met said.

If the above is true then it sounds like a good idea - but who makes sure it actually happens?

Can see both points of views here.

Back in 2012 (relating to mugshots) "the High Court in London had ruled this practice of keeping pictures of presumed innocent people on file unlawful yet 5 years on "the Home Office stopped short of demanding the deletion of all images of innocent people no longer under investigation because, apparently, there are so many photos on file, it would be impractical to ask officers to go through all their databases and remove photographs of individuals who have never been convicted of an offence".

Meanwhile, a newly famous pop star has used his fame to question why these raids took place. Racist innit, didn't happen before Glastonbury.

It was probably racist why they picked up those particular dealers too?

And I guess he doesn't realise that unlike all these raids Glastonbury isn't somewhere covered by the Met?

Glastonbury is also less affected by all sorts of crime that repeatedly affects the Carnival but he wont remember that either. Maybe it would be inconvenient.

Denying actual facts and blaming other people for problems is why things end up so st in the first place.

It would be easier to just claim security issues and shut the whole thing down.

I went many moons ago with a couple of mates. The first pub we entered, we were offered at least 4 types of drugs before we even got to the bar. Within 5 minutes there was a fight apparently involving two dealers over who's turf they were on.....
I simply don't get why you would want to go to this event, given the risks of being robbed, stabbed, or even sexually assaulted, not to mention the lack of facilities, drug infestation & headache inducing non-stop racket. Each to his own I guess.

Ignore, just another grumpy old man yelling at clouds.

Like any gathering of 1000's of young people it can get a bit out of hand at times, but been many, many times even lately with young children, just apply common sense and you will be fine, there are a 100 and one vantage points that don't involve going into crowded areas

There are. You can tell as they will be the one's who will try to rob you, assault you with a knife and have no issue with ending your life. Yes they are in a proportional minority versus the total attending but watch out.

If your question was a serious one - take as little as possible with you, no ID if you can help it, a bit of cash, plenty of water.

Sorry, but its the wild west out there. I know - I once lived on the route and am well out of it.
