I went on Sunday and had a brilliant time, but that's maybe because;

a) I'm not a sad, wannabe gangster going looking for trouble
b) I kept away from most of the big crowds and found a nice chilled sound system and a nearby house party thumbup
c) I only had 4 beers and made sure I ate plenty throughout the day, so as not too get completely smashed

The only slight moment was when two pissed up Made in Chelsea wannabes got a but narky and accused me of jumping the queues for the loos., even though I'd been thee for at least 20 minuteshehe

Not sure how they managed that, half the crowd in that era jumped the fence smile

They don't search everyone. I walked in and out a few times last year and wasn't searched once, or the year before that.

Almost all of those arrests are for drug offences, I'm sure of the 74 cases most are just possession. If we had a sensible drugs policy (letting adults do aa they wish with their own bodies) the crime stats would be pretty unremarkable.

Arrests won't reflect criminal offences. There simply isn't enough Officers to deal with them all.
You'd think given this was the case the police would only focus on serious crimes rather than going for the wasy arrests...

I avoid this like the plaque, same as I avoided Derby Day when I lived in Epsom (before the usual wacist arguments get thrown about). Yes, I know you can have a good time, but there is also a good chance you'll meet some bellends and scrotes. Even the South Bank was too much for me today!

400 people a month are injured in knife attacks in London. I would be interested to know if the Carnival adds to that or simply changes the place they happen in for a day

Half is undercooking it a bit. I went in 2000, and by the police estimates around 100,000 paid to get in, and 250,000 didn't.

An interesting point certainly. My experience of the Bristol carnival is that it tends to ensure members of rival gangs are in the same vicinity and therefore 'beefs' get aired...

Spent 7 years living on the route. Stayed in the first year, made a point of being anywhere else after that if possible but was there a couple more times. Vandalism, petty theft & pissed up tts by the thousand by 9pm on the Monday. I had a basement flat at the back of a building with a small garden, accessible via an alley from the street. Used to need a st shovel & a large industrial strength plastic bag to clean it up on Tuesday evening, not nice.

Not much by the way of "carnival" about it either really - just a parade of trucks with ever larger sound systems on them. ISTR seeing one which was former British Gas van still in full livery with the back doors open & a sound system stacked up inside. Carnival float my arse!

It never stops on time either - and then they start sweeping cans & bottles down the streets to clear it up at about 2am. headache The aftermath goes on for most of the night for those that live there (who still have to get up & go to work in the morning!).

Bah Humbug!

If it went to HP the locals couldn't sell red stripe out of their front garden.
It would become massively commercialised with food vans and stalls. It'd loose the earthiness
Yeah it's rough
You have to be young to enjoy it
It's not for middle class trendies with Tarquin and Bunty
Go, but leave at half five six
It all gets a bit sporty when it gets late
The fact that you just can't get to a toilet is laughable
Three hundred people in a queue using a toilet in ground floor flat.
Police are very light handed, it's a massive pr excercise, I always they couldn't win whatever way they played it
The local yoof in west london have gang issues which The police would've had a good eye on, and targeted individuals or groups to search. This would account for the knife carrying nicks.
The Police want it to be safe, and these nicks make it safer. They can't win.

Go on Sunday
12 to 530 - 6 o'clock.
Dress urban.

Probably the best post on here.

I think it's great that something like this can still happen in the UK.

People like to drink, they like to take drugs. Some young people will want to fight. That's been pretty much the human experience for thousands of years.

Seems now some people want a sanitised version of life.

If you do t think it's for you..don't go.

As for the people that live there and complain about if...maybe go away for a few days?

I have friends that live near Hampton Court Palace. They go away when the flower show is on as it can take hours to get to their house, people park in their drive and leave a note saying sorry (seriously). Instead of frothing at the mouth -they just go and stay elsewhere.

So a few people get stabbed, at NHF not Hampton Court Flower show, well some people drowned in the sea last week; ban the seaside? How many drown angling each year, or get knocked off bikes when cycling?

The chances of you getting into bother at NHC is a lot less than the chances of a car accident on the way home I would expect.

What would they do about all the drugs? They would't want to close the whole of Glastonbury down and spoil the fun.

Smiler.

Just looks like another load of people pointlessly fighting to me.
It may shock you to learn this but, unlike the Atherstone Ball Game, fighting is not the primary activity conducted during Notting Hill Carnival.
Really? I'm shocked, i thought the Notting Hill carnival was just a big MMA contest...thanks for letting me know otherwise.

The stats provided by the OP show that while it may not be the primary activity it's certainly high up on the agenda.

They don't show that at all. Only 11 of the arrests relate to fighting. That could be literally one scrap.
