The reason I ask is if some one grabbed, slapped, punched or made an aggressive gesture at your new born you would in all honesty be devastated.

Knowing that it seems odd a person would do any of the above joke or otherwise thus I am left to assume the person in question is basically a an deseves a slap himslef to knock some sense into him. The fact the father did not attack him seems to suggest it was more of grab swipe etc than a punch as I suspect most parents would be unable to control the urge to protect there child.

situations like this could so easily get out of hand. example your in supermarket with new born some halfwit goes to grab your child as a joke (you dont know this) fearing for your childs life you grab nearest thing to hand an attack said halfwit. Sadly the thing you grab is a bottle of own brand vodka and you kill them....whoes to blame I would say the person who went to grab the child but courts would see it differently I suspect.

Being stupid is not a defense gabbing at a new born child that is not your own is just moronic an deserves punishment (by the law)
The logic fail here is that you are assuming the guy grabbed, slapped, punched.

If you can't envisage a father being restrained enough not to attack someone who did that to his child, why do you assume that's what happened.

Is it more likely Dad just stood there and watched, or that a punch wasn't what happened. It just got reported that way.

IF THE GUY GRABBED SLAPPED OR PUNCHED A CHILD I WILL PICK UP MY PITCHFORK AND JOIN THE CURRENT CROWD ON THIS THREAD. NO QUESTION. NEVER SAID ANY DIFFERENT

I just think you lot are being led around by a headline soundbite which will end up being nothing as usual.
Why would that be an unreasonable assumption or 'logic fail' when there's the report combined with the arrest? He also said, "or make an aggressive gesture" as an alternative, which you excluded.

He's been charged with an assault, so the assessment is there's a realistic prospect of conviction: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-manchester-37...

Jesus mary mother of god, WTF,

Could have happened to anyone????????

Anyone who thought walking up to a stranger in a supermarket with a pushchair and thinking "oh thats a realistic doll, I know i'm going to punch it in the face for a laugh"

It's not often i swear online these days but really, fk off you stupid fking !!!!!

From the report, it seems they spotted a work colleague of a neighbour and her 63 year old husband hit the baby after they walked over.

So, not exactly strangers and who knows how the conversation / actions played out. A silly sense of humour seems to be all that is at play here and it backfired.

Unless, of course, people think this 63 year old guy punches babies for fun. That's the only other way to look at it. Which seems more likely?
These people exist; look at Mr Grimnasty.

What a total fking .
It was a mistake, a bad attempt to be funny, and luckily no harm done.

Twice in recent months I've asked a mum if the baby in the pram is real or one of those dolls. Bizarrely very young babies are so perfect they do look like the dolls some 'odd' people buy, or the ones given to young girls to make them think about getting knocked up.
Yeah easy mistake to make .

P.S. Please stay away from my children.

It's kind of the 'banter' attitude, isn't it?

That doing something fantastically rude or otherwise straightforwardly completely unacceptable is fine if it's in pursuit of appearing funny.

fk the fk off you fking aholes. Unknowing members of the public are not your comedic devices.

He didn't think it was though. Should make for an interesting court case.
It doesn't make a damn's worth of difference if he thought it was a doll or not

You might want to rethink that. It's been a staple of various TV shows, live comedy, theatre etc over the years, from the early 60s Candid Camera to Jackass to You've Been Framed to the kind of stuff McKenna does.

Has anyone considered that the alleged puncher may be mentally ill? I can't think of another credible explanation for this one.

Strange and sad case. Hopefully no long term damage to the little one.

Its the only conclusion I could draw from the sorry tale. I cant see any reason for punching a child or a doll for that matter other than planet loopy.

It might be odd behaviour, but I'm sure all those who are busting blood vessels over it would laugh, take the pee and bring it up in conversation again and again should one of their friends walk in to the pub and declare this just happened to them.

Unless of course you would genuinely disown your friend and tell them to seek medical help.

Bizarre.

The bloke deserves to feel the full weight of the law. Then maybe people will engage their brains before punching what looks like a doll (what adult takes a doll to a supermarket ffs?).
Just a stupid mistake, engaging the full weight of the law will make no difference to this case or any future case and would clearly not be in the public interest.

But the way the police/CPS are these days, lacking any common sense, it'll probably go all the way and get some token punishment.

"Reports claims the suspect said "sorry, I thought it was a doll"."

Clearly he thought he'd twigged it was 'one of those' dolls (they are indistinguishable) and was 100% sure, and as the other people had been fooled, hitting it would be hilarious to see their reaction.

That sounds daft but as it all happened in an instant it is easy to see how it happened with no malice or mental illness involved.

Also equally evident is that a full grown man punching a baby in the head with all his strength would kill it, it was clearly no more than a playful tap.

A colleague suggested that today. I hadn't considered that. If that is the case, he needs to be committed for the safety of babies and young children.

I would like to know more details about the case, mainly if it was by the reduced meats section as that would change everything, I've witnessed first hand how people use trolleys to block others from reaching the reductions.

I'm surprised this has got to four pages without someone mentioning that showing off a few days old baby in Tesco definitely belongs in the a bit council thread.

Damn those common-sense lacking police and CPS who investigate and prosecute those who assault 5-day old babies.

Whatever will they do next.

Very true and so very easily ignored when the witch-hunt is on.

After seeing images from the Mothers FB profile, as my friend said, you could mistake her for a doll, too!

I wonder what percentage of arrests don't end in conviction. Shaky ground then for the assumption that a crime was committed because of an arrest.

I really don't know what the true story is here and I've 'excluded' nothing. People are simply attributing an apologist attitude to me because they themselves are outraged.

Empirically a baby punched In the face by a man should need a lot more than a check over and discharge from the hospital don't you think?

A man who does this intentionally is unlikely to suddenly start apologising for it don't you think?

There is sufficient doubt in the story as presented for me to take pause.

Hopefully the true story will come out in time, but your willingness to join the mob is a bit disappointing.
