He's right though - people have had enough of "experts". He didn't say that the "experts" were wrong - he just said that ordinary people don't trust them anymore. This is an accurate observation.

They only don't believe them because the internet is just one massive confirmation bias machine, whilst it contains all the right knowledge it also contains a huge amount of incorrect knowledge with no real way, other than prejudice, to decipher one from the other.

Anyone can be an expert on the Internet biggrin . Part of the trouble is that the "experts" have lost some credibility with banks going bankrupt, election polls being inaccurate, various food studies suggesting things are bad for you/the best thing in the world and then the exact opposite a few weeks later. The shades of grey where most knowledge lies are lost in some people desiring a yes/no answer to any question.

Eric Mc, this is complete and utter bks.

People are not sick of experts. Maybe sick of being told which way to feel, but not expertise.

Do you hear...
Oh balls to you experts, I don't believe these things are falling when I drop them, I don't believe these computers don't work by magic, I don't believe I can fly in a plane, drive cars etc etc.

The quote was:

" I think the people of this country have had enough of experts from organisations with acronyms saying that they know what is best and getting it consistently wrong"

In the context of a discussion about economists, who, to be fair, are a group of experts who don't have a great track record at predicting stuff in the recent past.

Suggesting, as you have, that well modelled areas of science and engineering such as newtonian mechanics and electronics are in the same league is highly disingenuous.

Yeah, people writing these reports don't seem to know or care how scientific research works. They'll find some research and publish it as fact. Then find some other research that contradicts the original report and also publish this as fact, leading to confusion.

Often this research will be credited to amorphous experts which again leads to confusion. Is it the same person doing both sets of research? unlikely but who knows when they are never named.

There are very rarely hard and fast truths in science. Even the fundamentals of physics aren't set in stone.

We're all experts now thanks to the internet.

No need to waste years studying or researching, five minutes on Google to find anybody who's written something that validates what you already agree with is all you need.

I love the internet for all the good it brings, but the increasingly stupid and extreme voices in authority combined with a limp media unable to hold them to account is leading us down a very dark path.

If it was simply gravity, then how do you explain the "bulge" on the opposite side of the planet?

The moon seems to suck the water on the side of the planet that the moon is facing.

How do you explain the fact that the moon appears to push away the water on the other side? Gravity doesn't do that!

The implication of that statement was that he thought he knew better than experts from organisations. He is one to talk about knowing what is best and getting things wrong. I was aghast at some of the decisions that Gove made when in charge of schools. He repeatedly, according to reports, did not seek the advice of experts but went ahead with his own prejudices. When they were shown to be unworkable he said it was the job of his underlings to make fantastical ideas look sensible. Not his actual words but something along those lines.

We don't have to follow the suggestions of experts but we do need to listen to them.

Great thread haha.

Edit: Is Carswell's whole purpose an attempt to discredit UKIP/Farage/Leave?
