Prince William: 'We must do more on illegal ivory trade'

A nice issue to take up arms for. I hope he sticks with it.

Also just seen, how cheetahs are being threatened by fkwit rich ARabs wanting them as pets.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-3745...

They just had a quick run-down on some big cats

cheetahs 100,000 down to 7,000 since 1900
tigers down from 100,000 in 1900 to 3,000 circa
Lions down from 400,000 in 1950 to 20,000 now.

I guess he's probably still doing what Granny tells him so it's unlikely.

When the world is imploding he's worried about Ivory?

How about giving back the precious metals that the monarchy stole from Africa first.

How will that help the present day poaching situation?

By showing that uk royals don't covet it and ascribe such little value to it that it can be destroyed

Do you really believe that the lust for ivory in Vietnam and China
will be moderated by the destruction of the royal collection of pre-1947 artefacts
that contain ivory?

I really don't see how its destruction will help preserve the living elephant.

Really? How can it not be admirable to be concerned about wildlife and what the human scum are doing to hunt them to extinction?

Ross Kemp was on R4's Loose Ends tonight talking about this (amongst other stuff) & said at the current rate of poaching, there'll be no elephants in the wild in Mozambique within 5 years.

I also heard on R4 yesterday that the owner of a nature reserve in Africa is going to have the horns taken off her two Rhinos as the risk of them being killed is too great. Despite having round the clock guards & surveillance.

Sad state of affairs.

Quite why you would want to destroy large stock piles of already poached ivory and older artefacts is beyond me. What exactly is that idea supposed to achieve ? All it will do is to make a rare and valuable commodity even more rarer and sort after for the fkwit who thinks that somehow it enriches their life to have this stuff drapped around themselves. However distasteful it is, why don't they just flood the market with what has already been confiscated to hopefully lower its value, what's done is done, you're never going to bring the elephant back.

The money collected can then be ploughed back into the system to help and educate those who are struggling to feed their families and are having their crops destroyed by the Elephants. If you help these people who find themselves in this position, they might, just might not need to poach any more. Strange concept that but there you go.

The program With Ross Kemp the other day showed that people who live with elephants, see them as vermin and are even helped by the Government to shoot them if they are becoming a pest. Strangely enough the authorities then take away all the remains to no doubt profit from it all...did the villages see any of the profits? ......... hahaha yeah right course they did.

Why are there even stocks of ivory anyway ? It wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if the authorities are drip feeding it to the market and pocketing the spoils themselves.

Narrrr sod that for a game of top trumps, I'll just sit up here on my high horse and dictate and wag my finger at the less fortunate class on how to live their lives. The dumb public will love me as I give out a few sound bite speeches in return for a few crustless cucumber sandwiches.

Meanwhile it's "Shoot a Stag and Pimms Weekend " at Jemima Bottomley Bumshead daddies country pile.

The world could stop ivory poaching/the killing of elephants tomorrow if it wanted it; but it chooses not to.

It's very simple indeed.

It's all about risk and reward. There's little risk for the poachers but big rewards. So just change the balance. All that has to be done is to kill 2 or 3 poachers, maybe half a dozen and it will stop there and then.
