If you get away with murder then you wouldn't do any time at all, surely? If you are found guilty of murder I'd expect you to do a bit more than 5 but I'm no expert!

I suppose it does seem quite harsh but then who doesn't know stun guns are illegal??

I've used a knife several times so far today. I can remember cutting some string and opening a packet of bacon. I can't think of any similarly peaceful applications for a taser.

I thought the "hang 'em high" collective on PH wanted to see stiffer sentencing. Or is that just for car vandals and burglars?

Bit of a strange thing to buy as a "joke" not least because of how he got it back into the UK.

If you compare it to the sentences people get for causing people real physical harm perhaps it seems unfair, but do you want one law for when it's a "good bloke" and another law then it's Wayne off the council estate who everyone knows is a bit of a wrong'un?

I was expecting this response, it's stupidity on his part no doubt, but an extremely heavy fine would he more the sufficient. A car driven at 100mph could be considered a lethal weapon could it not?
So should a stun gun be put in the same category as an ak47?

If I was a relative/friend of the man, I'd be fuming at the same time heartbroken at the sentence.

I presume he was "stunned" by the severity of the sentence.

It is classed as an absolute offense. Look it up.

No sympathy here. A stun gun/taser is classed as a firearm and as such is a prohibited weapon. Has he been living in a cave to think it was okay to keep this? Says a lot about airport security not picking this up.

rofl

ETA: Having read the link I'm with the OP on this one. The man is guilty of being a prat, nothing more. Anybody with malice intent would not be (a) using it on themselves and (b) putting it on YT.

He should have been tasered by the professionals and then sent on his way.

They are generally carried by women in their purse for self defense.

The problem when you buy a weapon that is disguised is that it leads to a whole new level of sinister intent.

The reality is he smuggled a weapon into the UK and then showed it to minors and on the internet.

UK law also classes pepper spray as a weapon. Ergo 5 years in jail.

matching this against crimes which have received the same or less sentence is a sad exercise. It makes no sense and shows that courts don't seem to care to distinguish between actual nasty, scum who cause irreparable damage to victims and their families (and usually as part of long-standing habitual behaviour) and what is, essentially, a benign act of stupidity.
The judiciary are bound by sentencing guidelines.

Part of being 'tough on gun crime' meant that people in possessions of 'guns' receive a 5-year minimum sentence unless there are exceptional circumstances.

I honestly didn't realise a tazer was classed as a fire arm. Not that I'd have any inclination to ever buy one mind.
