Or a bad man zaps an attractive young girl with it, knocks her out for 15 minutes and rapes her.

These are very very serious weapons.

five years is the minimum sentence for a reason. If enough idiots get five years word gets out. I doubt any of his mates will be keeping the ones they had.
Chances are he wouldn't have got much more than five years if he done that!

Yes he would. Unquestionably.

Have I gone insane or something? It's a taser... Someone zaps you on the back of the arm with it, you should "ahhh ya bd" it stings for a few seconds then you get over it.

Surely its far less dangerous than a paintball gun that people pay to shoot each other with, for a bit of a laugh and childish fun wink

These are very very serious weapons. They incapacitate people totally for 15 minutes and can kill.

So could a rock.

I think intentions play a pretty important role here, the judge said "There was no suggestion that he had anything other than an innocent reason for possessing the firearm.”

I'm not saying tasers should be legal. Taking the article at face value, the punishment should be proportional to the crime. Which appears to be very minor IMO.

I remember when these where easily available on Ebay, imported from America and they would run off a few 9v batteries. They gave a pretty good shock but didn't put you down for 15 mins.

The sentence does sound harsh but the fact its a disguised weapon just nails it really. If it had been a teenager in a hoody caught with it on a dark street corner, would people still be saying its a harsh sentence?

Reminded me of this same offence ( actually thus is worse) why such disparity ? Also didn't a member of so solid crew get caught with a real hand gun in a night club and got let off Scot free saying he found it.

TRICK or treat children fled screaming when a masked Halloween prankster opened his door and activated a stun gun, a court heard.

Bradford Crown Court was yesterday shown a video of Faisal Hussain pulling on a balaclava, going to his door and pointing the weapon towards the frightened youngsters.

Hussain was sentenced to a 12-month community order and ordered to carry out 180 hours of unpaid community work.

Presumably because it wasn't a 'disguised' weapon. It was still ridiculously short though.

Ask Dalian Atkinson...
Can you make a clear point instead of being cryptic.

I'd guess you're saying he was killed by a taser, so tasers are dangerous. If this is the point you're making, its ridiculously stupid for many many reasons.
Its hardly cryptic it was all over the news not to mention PH but yeah he was killed after being tasered.

Maybe, but far less stupid than saying 'it stings for a few seconds then you get over it.'

I didn't know they were illegal let alone a serious offence, why would I? If I had ever given it any thought I'd have assumed they were one of those legal to own, illegal to carry in public type weapons. Learn something new every day.

They are definitely firearms in law. The definition of 'Firearm' in the Firearms Act includes all actual firearms (lethal barreled weapon, capable of discharging any shot, a bullet or other missile) and anything defined in the Act as a prohibited weapon under section 5. A stun device is a prohibited weapon under section 5 and so is therefore a firearm by definition.

I'm not surprised that people weren't aware of the legal specifics but I'm very, very surprised that anyone thinks that possessing one (let alone smuggling them into the country) is anything other than a rather serious offence!
I'm surprised it is in the same category as a real pistol. After all, the police differentiate tasers and firearms.

Kids used to make taser-like devices, it isn't difficult...

matching this against crimes which have received the same or less sentence is a sad exercise. It makes no sense and shows that courts don't seem to care to distinguish between actual nasty, scum who cause irreparable damage to victims and their families (and usually as part of long-standing habitual behaviour) and what is, essentially, a benign act of stupidity.

Who said anything about dying?

Others in the thread have explained it better than I ever could. They are very dangerous weapons and the idea of people just randomly carrying them on the street is terrifying.

The police are trianed to use them properly and proportionately. I realise there have been some, ahem, 'incidents' surrounding that but by and large I'm comfortable with the police having them, but not random members of the public who think they're cool and funny.

They are generally carried by woman for self defence.

Personally I think it's a good idea, along with pepper spray.

This is getting ridiculous, how many women in the UK do you know carry tasers or pepper spray?

None. But they might save prevent rapes/save lives in some situations.
