Is he (or the labour party) paying their travel costs?

I can't see the EU picking up the tab for a "piss up" in the UK

BBC saying Batley and Spen (Jo Cox constituency) was retained by Labour with 85% of the vote. Unsurprising, given none of the major parties put forward a candidates.

But turnout was only 25% vs 64% at the last general election. Shockingly bad and to my mind, indicative of the real support Labour has. If a gifted by-election with emotive overtones cannot get the PLP to try and persuade electors to the polls, what on earth will?

That makes no sense. I'm surprised it was as high as 25% if there was no need to turn out to make sure another major party didn't get in.

Indeed. Why bother to turn out if you're say a Conservative, or support any other party without a candidate.

what was the poing in going out to vote? You knew who would win, so let your neighbours go out in t'rain to vote. They could have had 1 vote and it would have been enough

Not quite - as I understand it the right wing knobbers had someone. I still don't agree that it should have been uncontested but that's a whole other argument

If Labour had received one vote we'd have had an English Democrat MP sitting for Batley & Spen, whoever they are.

Not to my mind. Sorry, I wasn't clear. This was a golden opportunity for Labour to demonstrate the power of their reach into the broader electorate. Winning here with 85% of say a 50% turnout would have put the frighteners quite hard on the Tories, even without any meaningful opposition. It would have raised the prospect of New Old Labour actually being able to get votes from the population outside of Momentum and the 350k new members.

The BBC were still announcing this at lunchtime, though interestingly without the last two of the above three sentences.

Mmmmm.....

Maybe they were bored after repeatedly making all of those points, along with the fact that it was one of the lowest turnouts since the Second World War, on the Today programme this morning.

Then why quote the 85% bit and not the rest...?

Or, because they don't see it as appropriate to begin political point scoring over a murdered woman's constituency...

To be fair to Corbyn, I've been looking for precisely that kind of comment today. And haven't found one. Fair play.

Not even to comment as a tribute, even on the Party press release website, seems somewhat insensitive.

But they 'have' politically point scored - by gleefully announcing the 85% bit and not the rest.

Gleefully. Really?

Anyway, the BBC News at 10 report I've just watched didn't mention the percentage at all and said the seat was uncontested which is untrue. Your conspiracy theory of a secret agenda has just fallen flat on its arse.

Yes, Jane Hill was quite chipper at lunchtime.
