As Trump said on Monday, there is a serious lack of investment and political will, into the infrastructure of the transportation system. It won't be the last.
Who's responsible for investment in NY's transportation system? Does the mayor have any control?

As this occurred in New Jersey, it won't be the Mayor of NYC either.

Its close to NYC, for sure, but Hoboken is just over the border in New Jersey. The train was heading to NYC also. but its easier for everyone to say New York than worry about the specifics etc.

Still, it is Trump's mate Chris Christie who is charge in NYC, if I'm not mistaken?

An American colleague in my office also mentioned its a New Jersey Transit train. Its the line he uses to get to our New Jersey office.

American trains are built like tanks... It seems the train has remained intact, despite using the terminal building as a brake. This will have saved many lives.

Early suggestions are that the driver has suffered a medical issue whilst at the controls, causing the crash.

Not sure how more investment would stop a crash like that happening?

TPWS?

Trains can be run without people driving them, and they can be designed to fail a lot safer than a person.

From what I've read, this particular train had a system whereby if it didn't detect driver input every 60 seconds then it would automatically stop the train. If the news is to be believed, It would appear that 60 seconds was long enough for the driver to pass out and the train to then reach the station and crash. Had the driver passed out 15 seconds earlier this might not have happened and the automatic stop would have activated before the train struck the platform.

Seems extrmely unlucky if this is the case.
