Early suggestions are that the driver has suffered a medical issue whilst at the controls, causing the crash.

Not sure how more investment would stop a crash like that happening?
Lots of safety systems, like we have here in the UK.

From what I've read, this particular train had a system whereby if it didn't detect driver input every 60 seconds then it would automatically stop the train. If the news is to be believed, It would appear that 60 seconds was long enough for the driver to pass out and the train to then reach the station and crash. Had the driver passed out 15 seconds earlier this might not have happened and the automatic stop would have activated before the train struck the platform.

Seems extrmely unlucky if this is the case.
Had that been here the driver may have passed out but if he was doing more than 10mph into the platform (about 3 coaches from the buffers, as a general rule) then the emergency brakes would have been applied. It wont stop something hurtling in, but other bits probably would come into play by then.

Accidents can occur with the narrowest of margins. The investigators of the crash at Hull in 1927 concluded that the signalman would have only had a window of a fraction of a second to pull the wrong point lever to cause the accident, otherwise the interlocking would have prevented him from doing so.
