Hi. My brother has agreed to look after our son for the weekend so am looking to take the wife away for a couple of nights at the end of November which will only be the second time in 5 years we have been away together.

Requirements: no more than 2 hours drive from Birmingham, not a city break, decent bars and restaurants, nice hotel, cultural is good, would like to make it a bit special. Willing to spend a bit, but not too crazy. The previous time we went away was the Cotswold's, so maybe not there.

Any suggestions?
Cheers

We did a last minute long 2 night break away in Dorset last weekend and had a great time. We like a good hike so got there Friday evening, good dinner and sleep then up Saturday to do this walk.

Didn't take too long, but it was very rewarding and the Anchor Inn Pub at the end is fantastic.

Appreciate that it may be more than 2 hours away, but it was 4 hours for us in the car from East London and it was really worth it.

We stayed here too and it was great

You know I'd have said this too, maybe the Feathers. But I went recently and it all seems a bit...well.....
Daggy these days.

Let me second Stockbridge. Come to Hampshire - it's a beautiful county. Stockbridge has the river Test running through it. Literally, it goes under the main street. Fantastic. There's a hotel there, there's cutesie shops. Nearby is the Peat Spade Inn - a fantastic lunch/dinner spot. You can visit Mottisfont Abbey - a National Trust place and see the world famous Test Valley Trout swimming under the entry bridge. Not far away is Pilot Hill and Ashmansworth, look up the AA walk nearby - it's a cracker, or maybe go to Combe Gibbet and take a walk around Inkpen. If you fancy there's Watership Down - and in Kingsclere you can visit a pub and eat the pie!

Get Googling and plan a cracking weekend. Don't bother with Basingstoke. hehe

Not sure if you can reach here in two hours but it's worth the trip (some rooms have hot tubs):

We're going here in a couple of weekends time

Near enough to bicester village so she can do some shopping - decent restaurant on site by all accounts.

Local to Silverstone.... (not sure if that counts as a positive with the o/h)

Few decent local walks - village pub etc.

Spa.

Was going to suggest Stratford-on-Avon but you say no city breaks, that's where the wife and I went last year for our wedding anniversary a single night of freedom from the kids (thanks in-laws). Nice pubs and we found a nice restaurant on Trip Advisor prior to heading there so booked that.

I know Fawsley Hall of old. Beautiful building. Fabulous grounds with a walk out of the hotel to the Village Pub - definitely recommend that if the weather is good. Dinner was excellent, if pricey. The extras were very pricey.

All in all I'd say scrutinise what you are paying for things, but you will have an excellent time. Enjoy!

Was going to suggest Brecon Beacons but at the end of November it may be a little wild.

However, the scenery is fantastic, pubs and beer choice superb and food is great especially if you like game.

Crickhowel is a nice place to use as a base.
Lots of interesting things and places to visit or just settle in a nice pub with the papers and a pint.

We stayed in Talybont. Not much there but some superb walking and cycling in the immediate area.

If weather permits climb Pen-y-fan. Its the highest point in southern UK and you can see the north Devon coastline on a clear day.

If you stay in Talybont this is all you need of an evening: http://www.starinntalybont.co.uk/

Spent a memorable few evenings in that pub with friends working our way through the many real ales after freezing our arses off on the top of the Beacons biggrin Even stayed there a few times, the landlord does you a good breakfast in the morning and if your "lucky" will be singing along to some Elvis too. He even offered us a beer to go with our sausages and bacon biggrin If you're after somewhere romantic though the Usk Inn down the road is a bit more conducive, the accomodation at the Star is functional rather than luxurious.

Somewhere close to this, but more cultural that might fit the bill is Hay-on-Wye - we stopped overnight there last month and it would seem to fit your criteria, very pretty small town, nice independent type shops, and good pubs / restaurants
