I'm currently writing this crushed up against the train window. In the section of the carriage I'm in the seats are arranged 3 across with another 3 facing me. I was one of the first on the carriage and chose the window seat as thee is a handy little ledge you can rest your foot on. More people got on the train, and the seats gradually fill up leaving the seat in the middle free. Then a guy the size of about 3 people gets on sees the seat and without so much of an excuse me proceeds to wedge himself in the space designed for one normal sized person, forcing me up against the side of the train at and angle (mmmmm comfy)and the other person half off his seat in the aisle.

What the fk is wrong with these people? They cant be that oblivious can they?

I always sit on the seat closest to the aisle if there's multiple seats free simply to avoid situations like this, over the years it's got worse and worse, it's not always just fatties though occasionally you'll get someone who feels the need to 'manspread' excessively, I usually tell them to stop trying to touch up my legs if I'm already seated first and it usually stops them in their tracks.

One incident I remember vividly was a few years back when I had to take a rucksack on the train and was wearing it back to front, the carriage was rammed and didn't have the room to take it off, some obese female had the audacity to demand that I take it off, I told her she took up more space than myself even with my bag on then told her to go on a diet and she went absolutely mental, I wish someone recorded the encounter as it would definitely have gone viral.

Can't you snuggle in and use him like a giant bean bag?

It's not just chubbies, I had someone (normal sized) bloke fall asleep on me the other day, I also had to move seats due to an chap who smelled like dead pigs in an abattoir.
It's just part of the fun of public transport.

Short answer - yes they were but they were designed for 4 a side seating (three in first class and some older pre-nationalisation coaching stock)

Longer answer:

Non-corridor coaches had six a side seating.

Mk 1 open coaches sat four around tables so, going across the coach there were two seats on one side of the aisle and two seats on the other. Modern main line stock has a similar arrangements, although often with airline style seats.

The type of coach the OP seems to be describing are those with 3 seats on one side of the aisle and 2 seats on the other. These were intended for local trains but, of course, "local trains" can be going for some considerable time from starting station to destination. They have also been around for at least 40 years.

Five seats across the coach does mean that the space per person is slightly less than when there are four seats across the coach, but in truth it's not particularly new. Of course, then you add to this mix that the population is getting wider, and this leads to an unusually close relationship with the person sitting next to you.

You gave up your defence of the boundary line without a fight, I'm surprised he's not eating your food at the same time.

Use your elbows next time.

i got fed up with sweaty people next to me on a train many moons ago so fell into motorbikes as a way of commuting.

i'd still rather die on a bike than be stuck next to someone on a train!

If you choose first class you will find chubby people have plenty of room. I am a chubby myself and do onboard dudiligence before sitting down. If the tummy is pushed against the table then you may have an issue, use the excuse the plug is broken and choose another seat.
