"Appearances" it seems to be the reason we sent small warships to "escort" this fleet down the North Sea and channel when it could have been tracked by radar and maritime patrol aircraft, or does Michael Fallon think the Russians were going to sail into the Thames estuary or into Portsmouth, to attack us?
Of course it just appearances....

Oh, and we don't have any maritime patrol aircraft anymore - the Govt scrapped them all, and their new replacements....

The small warships, or at least one of them packs a decent punch. PAAMS is an order of magnitude more capable than anything the Russians paraded through the English Channel this week. And don't forget that escorting them served a number of purposes - PR, focusing the minds of Whitehall (and matelots accustomed to peacetime) and a limited amount of intelligence gathering no doubt. If an RN SSN hasn't been sniffing around them in recent weeks, I'd eat my hat..

That crossed my mind, but would sort of reinforce the RT analyst's point.
But we will have 2 completed very soon he largest in the world and a new fleet of Type 25 stealth destroyers plus the replacement vanguard trident subs
The post was referring to maritime patrol aircraft, not aircraft carriers. Of which we have a grand total of....none.
Aside from that, yes we could easily track them that way.

Looking at the Kuznetsov's emissions, my grandpa could easily track her, and he's got cataracts in both eyes, and he's been dead for thirty-odd years.

You do realise the Russians developed a stealth mode for the Kuznetsov?

As in breaking down and getting towed by the tug.

I'm not sure when the first P8s are due to arrive, but in the meantime the Sentinels, Shadows or even Reapers could do a reasonable job albeit with less loiter time. Hell, even the army's BN Islanders could do the job in the channel area.

Rumour is the septics have despatched a couple of P8's from over the pond to keep an eye on them from afar.

Damnit. Reliance on psall chacker.

He could be Foggy's apprentice, what jolly japes and near scrapes will he get up to today with a ICBM and T72, things go awry when he tries to annex Auntie Wainwright's shop using a pair of Nora Batty's old tights as a launcher.

They are going to refuel in Ceuta, North Africa. You know that Spanish city on the North African coast, and they make such a fuss about Gibraltar. Hypocritical.

I wonder how closely HMS Astute, Artful or Ambush are shadowing the Russian task force... assuming at least one of them is seaworthy that is.
