I wonder what peoples attitudes are to the Indonesian plan to chemically castrate pedophiles.
There is a strong condemnation of the plan but I think that many people would agree with it.

When one of those horrible incidences are reported, it is a very common outcry that "he should be castrated".
I find myself not disagreeing.

Obviously, as with capital punishment, the risk is that innocent people may suffer.
For that reason I think that it would not be acceptable.

If the conviction is beyond doubt then I have no problem with whatever punishment is levied, particularly if it's appropriate to the crime.

Surely to be found guilty in the first place it must be beyond doubt? Could the procedure be reversed if they are later found to be innocent?

Doubtfull.

I believe there are peodophiles who'd quite happily undergo such procedures in an attempt to get rid of the urges they'd rather be without and live as a risk-free person, so crack on.

Was it not the approved method of treating homosexual men at the time of the Alan Turing arrest?

It was certainly implied in the film.

Is the treatment a sort of testosterone suppressant like those given to prostate cancer sufferers - i.e. a daily tablet? Or is it a one-off depth-charge that blows your nuts to smithereens for ever, as it were?

I spend a lot of time in Indonesia, police are not very efficient, so much of the extreme penalties are in reality just a deterrent, this policy is popular with most Indonesians. Much of the pedophilia in SE Asia is also incest, it seams that all the cases in the paper are uncle/niece type relationships and if action is taken then guilt is so far beyond doubt that it falls into place with little investigation. The recent case of the Brutish guy here in KL demonstrates what I mean, that prosecution was actually done by the Aussies/British courts, appears to be no interest/skill here in doing the work of chasing up on the 'internet' type of case. So I would imagine any one who had this penalty applied would literately be caught in the act with guilt well beyond doubt..

Looking on wiki it seems fairly common around the world even a case here in the UK.

They have their balls inserted into a plastic bag and held on with an elastic band. The bag is filled with concentrated sulphuric acid!

That would have been my suggested method.

Interesting replies, thanks.

I meant beyond all doubt rather than beyond reasonable doubt.

If there's absolutely no question regarding guilt then whatever punishment is fine.

we should look at this in the uk the question is would this be any sort of detterant to the people who commit these crimes? If they believe they are never going to get caught then the punishment is not going to make any difference.

I think this is a very good idea as a last result. I'm not sure how good the Indonesian justice system is so I'll reserve judgement on that one. I don't think you can compare this to the Alan Turing argument, as much as I'm not gay, homosexuality is different to paedophilia

Doesn't bromide in their tea work anymore?

Apparently army tea takes a long time to have any effect- my father reckons it's just starting to work on him now. He left in 1968.

It will always be possible to raise unreasonable doubts.

Given that the activities of these sad excuses for humans are more about violence and power than about anything any functional person would call sex, I've heard it said - apologies for lack of source - that violent rapists rendered unable to rape with their own anatomy will just be more inclined to use an inanimate object instead, with potentially far worse outcomes for victims. Unless you're also absolutely guaranteeing life imprisonment, there seems to be potential for a horrible chip on their shoulder/self pity/self-righteousness (obviously amazingly misplaced) then fuelling further violent attacks of whatever nature.

Tldr: seems it may not really achieve much.

Acting on these impulses is a choice, not a medical condition. I don't see why we don't kill them.
