Was anything suggesting the thousands promised in the Conservative party manifesto? If not then I don't quite know what real reason they have to get too worked up. Maybe the Lib Dems can take up the pledge to bring thousands more to the UK to go with their aim to keep us in the EU, then we can see how popular it is.

350 too many. Until they can sort out genuine children from men in their 30s then we shouldn't allow any in.

Note that there's another 700 been admitted under EU rules, rules they said didn't exist when they were still trying to claim they could control immigration within the EU.

Not just the charities. I commented on a news article with a simple "Well maybe if they had actually shown us children arriving their wouldn't have been such a backlash" I did it via my Facebook log in.
The hate is very palpable in the responses and some of the messages I received are borderline psychotic.

The sad thing is that lots of children will continue to suffer, until a genuine and workable way to determine those in genuine need is introduced. Obviously that won't make for such great 'newsworthy' editorial though.

Archbishop of Canterbury 'shocked' in child refugee row as Amber Rudd defends Dubs scheme closure

article said:
"Refugees, like all people, are treasured human beings made in the image of God who deserve safety, freedom and the opportunity to flourish. Jesus commands us to care for the most vulnerable among us," he said.
article said:
The senior Conservative suggested that the Dubs scheme could encourage people traffickers. "I am clear that when working with my French counterparts they do not want us to indefinitely continue to accept children under the Dubs amendment because they specify, and I agree with them, that it acts as a draw," Rudd told MPs.
Perhaps Welby should cash in on some of the Church's £5 bn+ of investments and help more refugees.

Some things I read on PH make me want to go religious. Do people care when governments go back on their word? Or do people only care if they agree with the thing the government is doing?

Does anyone have an easy way of creating a visual representation of three hundred in seventy million so that the callous, backwards, barely literate Neo-Nazis of this site can sleep easy knowing that these kids aren't going to make much of a difference to their every day lives?

I think an honest visual representation of these "kids" would help.

Or not. hehe

And this is exactly what leaves me so baffled by the sentiment here.

Say we're talking three hundred blokes - mid 40s. Lets assume they're the least sympathetic type of bloke imaginable, bar being a criminal. Just odd, in an odd blokey kind of way, but, ultimately, harmless.

What's the problem?

This post raises some interesting points:

-on a family by family basis, what incentive is there not to have kids? Developing countries tend to need the labour, and I doubt the armed rebels will care any more about Assad scaling back child benefit than they do barrel bombs, poison gas, mass detention and execution of Syrians by his regime

-china tried it, but the regime there is quite unique.

- I "sort of" see the logic if I squint a bit, but you'd be asking Syrians to deny a huge part of their humanity (reproduction is one of the tests of life) and I think that is far too big an ask.

-the uk took centuries to "become civilized". It's not a switch that can be simply flicked

- the Steven/ Matilda wars for example did have foreign mercenaries involved, but didn't have super powers using them as pawns ( I don't count medieval France as a super power). This conflict was devastating as a percentage of population affected.

- I would argue the developed nations do have a "human" duty to help develping countries through their strife, rather than just telling them to get civilised.

- This can't be a blank cheque though. It should be via international institutions pullung together.

- nor should we expect it to be free: it makes sense to help resolve the problem at source that continue to deal with the symptom

- what we're seeing is weak institutions palming off responsibility.

- whether is 300 or 3000 reaching the uk, there's something like 2m in Jordan and surrounding regions. Parts of the press are exaggerating the impact of Syria on the UK

- however, other parts of the press should acknowledge that migrants and adults passing themselves off as child refugees devalues the whole process, as they are using it as a smoke screen to basically access our more lucrative economy. Tackle one, and the other becomes easier

-I also suspect organised crime is behind a lot of the people trafficking: people being sold a dream and exploited. But exploiting people seems to be human nature too...

They're in France, which last time I checked was not a party to the Syrian civil war?
