If they were unaccompanied children say 4,5,6 year olds would the OP be any more compassionate or is he for real? Those "children" we all saw we're obviously not the age we should be taking they should be at home fighting to save their country. But orphaned infants should be welcomed with open arms.
Thats how I see things , genuine orphans , obviously of tender years, would be accepted without fuss. The unpalatable fact is, that young adults have been posing as minors for over a year at least , its caused some ructions in foster carer circles.

The great worry, is that these young adults will be accepted into the schools system at juvenile level.

rofl

104 posts barely counts, mind. The content of his post, on balance, is probably less offensive than his egregious misuse of punctuation.

Still a muppet, mind.

Indeed, but to be fair it's a decent reflection of a certain demographic in the country.

Opinions and turns of phrase like the one above by S3fella are genuinely racist and I find them repulsive but you'd be foolish to think that they're rare or niche, they're not, they're fairly mainstream and people are ever more brazen to air them both in anonymity on the internet and in real life. There are a lot of sad individuals around.

Diane Abbott believes we should have an open door policy for all these 'children' and feels ashamed that our government should even consider dental checks to verify their age. She has offered a place in her own home to this 18 year old while he finds work .

1000 yr 6 Syrian immigrants in Manchester alone? my arse
Of course, it makes no mention of whether these 'International new arrivals' are Syrian or not.

Some authorities state net immigration to March 2016 as slightly over 325000 people.
I find it reasonable that many thousands of those were children, it seems to me that the infrastructure and educational resources for these children must be in place immediately.

That 'immediate' spend is an expenditure before any tax is paid by those requiring it, and who can say if creating the new infrastructure and meeting the costs of staffing and other provision can be generated by those immigrants requiring such services in any reasonable timeframe?.
And at what cost in disruption and short term overspend to those already supporting the state with their own tax contributions?.

immigration of kids is a tiny fraction of that 325,000

school age kids is a smaller fraction again

the ones going to Manchester is a smaller fraction again

quick scope of wikipedia says " The study, 'No way out, no way in: Irregular migrant children and families in the UK', estimates a population of 120,000 children without status, of whom 65,000 were born in the UK to parents with no right to live in the country."

that's ones already living in UK, not migrating now

no doubt there's loads of recent migrant kids in cities all over the UK, many with poor English, but the idea that one city has 1000 new ones in one year group is over-egging the pudding

And get an education... What's so terrible about that?

A year or two either side of 9 to 16 I really can't see that it's a doomsday scenario.

That lord Dubster is saying this is only the start, we "need" to take thousands from Greece as well now.

Tell me, Lord, how many of these 30 years old rapey single male kids will you have living in your leafy village, I wonder? scratchchin
Before you call Lord Dubs that sort of name, I suggest you do just a tiny bit of research into who he is & where he came from.

I'm a little uneasy about allowing mass migration, given the cultural differences etc., but it seems a bit rich that we go around bombing the fk out of these places & then tell the people who have somehow made it out alive to fk off, particularly if they are children & have family members here. Granted: the ones who are obviously faking their age are an issue.

As many children as they like can from Syria as far as I care, but I can't help thinking that some sort of exodus might occur if we open our doors to young men from Africa.

The problem with accepting unaccompanied children is that many are not orphans. It is known that, once in the UK, the family can be brought over to support the child in its new environment.

All this does is encourage the trafficking of *more* unaccompanied children. The families send them ahead.

The whole thing's morally wrong on many levels (and I'm ignoring the whole age thing, which is a separate issue).

No worry, we only need "a few hundred" new schools in the next few years. And then to keep running and staffing them for the next twenty or so.

This

The Papers are all up in outrage of whether these "children" are under 18 or not. But few who hear the term "children" think of 16 & 17 year old boys in any case.

My dad was younger than virtually all the 300 being resettled, if not all, when be started his first job and started to earn his keep.

Exactly. A vast minority of people in the (former) Calais 'jungle' are/were from Syria.

As for the age of these people, I'm all for young refugees coming here (0-5 yrs old), as we can mould them into responsible citizens who will contribute to society. As horrible as it may sound, once they are teenagers they are probably beyond help, as world and cultural views and actions will be deep seated. By this I mainly mean attitudes towards women.

I'm genuinely curious : given the strong cultural differences, if the situation were reversed and 300 British children were camped on the border of Syria - even if they were genuine orphaned kids from a war torn country, and not economic opportunists lying about their age - would they be welcomed with open arms?

A few more yet. The BBC seems to be preparing the ground for a load more from Iraq too by talking about all those displaced by the assault on Mosul. I suspect this is far from over.

I know precisely his background, and clearly that is why he has this particular agenda and why he feels strongly on the subject. But that doesn't make it right in the minds of a huge number of people in this country who are stuggling to cope with what little THEY have. They feel equally as strongly and some of them are the ones that will be directly affected by this, rather than his Lordhsip whom I'd wager will not. Or am I wrong, is he putting up a few hundred at his gaff? Or in his village?

And precisely why are the immigrants in that peaceful country of Greece anything to so with us? Hasn't the UK / EU already sent billions to Greece to help with this issue? What are they doing with the money, apart from pissing it in the wind like they have all the EU bail outs?

Through the years Syria have taken in hundreds of thousands of Palestinian refugees. And anyway why do we want to compare ourselves with Middle Eastern despotic regimes - surely we're better than that.

Moreover we have played a part in destabilising the region so why should we not take a share of the orphaned refugees from Syria and Iraq? If we are not willing to clean up the mess then stop playing world policeman and bringing down regimes we don't like and creating chaos in the process.

The current batch coming from Calais doesn't appear to contain a lot of Syrians (the majority are Africans and Afghans) but we're also bringing over actual Syrians from refugee camps in the Middle East and if it's only a few hundred then I don't see what the big deal is.
