"Put the national interest first"? More like saving themselves from a dire result.
Labour frontbenchers have called on the party not to put forward a candidate to run against Zac Goldsmith in the forthcoming Richmond Park byelection, to give the Liberal Democrats a clear path to try to snatch the seat. Clive Lewis, the shadow business secretary, Jonathan Reynolds, the shadow City minister, and Lisa Nandy, a former shadow cabinet minister, said Labour should “put the national interest first” by doing what it could to reduce the Conservatives’ majority.
Tories doing the same thing for the same and opposite reason, they don't want a shilacking, or to let the LDs win. The Tories are doing it because it suits Tory interest. Fair enough.
Labour are however making the grand claim it's in the "national interest". Er no, it's in Labour's interest.
Different thing completely. Why not just be honest about it?

No, it's the same. On the DP the Tory dipstick said they were not going to oppose a well loved MP like Goldsmith, due to his passion or some such bks, when Brillo pointed out that's laughable, they didn't wish to give the LDs a chance. The Tory just kept quiet. The Tories are doing it because it suits Tory interest. Fair enough.

No difference, they both lie and are hopeless about it.

Still calling a narrow Lib Dem win personally, Goldsmiths "I'm not a Tory, honest" malarkey won't cut it IMO.
I'm going Goldsmith "Hold" just.....Still calling a narrow Lib Dem win personally, Goldsmiths "I'm not a Tory, honest" malarkey won't cut it IMO.
The libs have tried to make it Brexit and Heathrow
Goldsmith has stuck with Heathrow
Can't see anything else in the race having a shot.
As a local with a vote I attended the final hustings last night.
My summary ....
Zac - late and bothered after an accident en-route to the venue but still performed well
LibDem Woman - lightweight, sounded like a circa 2000 Blair Babe speak your weight machine. When she was pressed for straight answers by the audience she turned rather unpleasant in tone and demeanour (IMO)
Labour Man - Irrelevant
Audience - I never knew Richmond had so many mentalists
I've never seen so many LibDems in my life in Richmond over the past two weeks. Tim Farron appears to have moved in and Clegg is always here but today they unveiled their secret weapon ..... I despair ....

I'm not so sure that was a good move. I do hope that Zac prevails, he's been a very capable local MP.

In my own uninformed opinion, I predict Zac Goldsmith will retain the seat, but with a reduced majority. It is a little too early for the Liberal Democrats to harness a Brexit Backlash and his majority at the last election was a huge one. It is a very big hill for the Liberal Democrats to climb.

I didn't realise the LibDeb woman wanted to vote against Article 50 until I got the leaflet afterwards. Seems I wasn't rude enough to the LibDem canvasser - my parents were too polite to tell them they weren't voting for them. Unlike myself.
Of course she does....70% of Richmond Park voted Remain.Walter Sobchak said:

Tim Farron is going to be even more smug than he usually is if the Lib Dems win this.
Is it just me who thinks he looks like he's permanently about to start crying?.So if Goldsmith wins that's a vote FOR a hard Brexit?

I've not really picked up a smugness, but I know what you mean. A paper-thin act.Since they've said this is a by-election on leaving the EU, if Zac wins I hope they concede that even heavily Europhile Richmond accepts the referendum result.

In my opinion the more time that passes the less the opportunity to harness a 'Brexit Backlash' (if there was ever one at all).Edited by dbdb on Wednesday 30th November 19:38

So far there has been no backlash to Brexit - just the inevitable angst generated by a very narrow vote which would have been the same on a 52/48 margin whether the vote had favoured Leave or Remain. If once negotiations have started people fear and believe leaving will make them poorer, then that could change the balance of opinion in favour of staying. By the same token, if the negotiations go well and the balance of opinion is that the UK will be no worse off or even better off, then of course the country will still back leaving the EU - indeed the margin of voters choosing to leave may grow. Either way, it is too soon to know whether there will be a backlash against Brexit in my view.

Unlikely but maybe this is the reason for Mrs May's delaying.
Can't believe Miranda Green on BBCTW is trying to call a lib Dem win in Richmond Park means the lib dem's anti democratic position on the Brexit vote Is winning, fk off, playing in a constituency where they voted 70% remain, talk about a home field advantage...
If they do win, against Zac Goldsmith, who voted for Brexit yes, but without a Conservative party machine, and lib Dems deploying everybody they have.
I will laugh my arse off if the twit Goldsmith pulls it off.
I hate Tim Farron, only more than Nick Clegg, who in turn took over from Paddy Ashdown.
