That's kind of what is going on here in the UK at the moment, with different regions having different national aspirations. Ukraine could have stayed part of the Russian Federation - it chose not to. Just as what became Northern Ireland chose not to be part of an entity governed by a parliament in Dublin.
not many lands have had borders set in stone for more than a hundred years.
I'm currently sitting in a part of Germany which used to be France
sending in troops is not the best manner of international diplomacy, and the Russian have some form in it - as of course do the Americans, the Germans, the Brits etc
we should really try not to encourage it though
