Looks like the accident happened just outside the army sports stadium on Queen's Avenue.

Very sad, wonder if they were running in the road in the dark or whether the driver was being a dick, or just an unfortunate accident.
I hate that word in these sort of contexts. It suggests this was unavoidable and allows people to excuse themselves and I suspect it leads to us not learning lessons and knee jerk "fixes".Sad event.

A bit early to say. the road is absolutely dead straight - reasonably well lit - and there is even a marked cycle lane along virtually it's whole length.Of all the roads that might be considered dangerous in the Aldershot/Farnborough area - this would not be one of them.

My friend that lives there would disagree - it often has people speeding on it, because its straight.Of all the roads that might be considered dangerous in the Aldershot/Farnborough area - this would not be one of them.
Serving soldier arrested. Car looks like a Ford Focus ST - but I'm no expert.

Professionally run running club - they wouldn't have been running on the road, especially as there is a wide pavement there. Crossing I would think.
Weather was bad last night.

It's not the road that is dangerous - it's people. Serving soldier arrested. Car looks like a Ford Focus ST - but I'm no expert.

For most of its length it has a 30 mph speed limit on it - as well as numerous sets of traffic lights. If a dead straight road with slow speed limits and lights in place is considered "dangerous", then what would you consider to be a "Safe" road?

He was on this road at 7pm last night and saw a Jag doing 'in excess' of 60 on the road.
As I said, there is nothing wrong with the road.
People break the law on all sorts of roads - well lit, dead straight ones or ones with sharp bends and poor lighting.
By road standards it is actually very good. I use it a lot - as a driver and a cyclist and, by and large. people using that road behave properly. I never feel particularly vulnerable on it.
The accident happened opposite the Army Sports Stadium so I wouldn't be surprised if these poor girls were actually crossing the road. There is a set of pedestrian lights nearby.
You can see the stadium and the lights in this picture -

I find the 30mph limit isn't well respected on that stretch of road, for just the reasons mentioned above - it's wide, quiet, well lit etc.
I know - turn off all the lights, put in speed humps and have chicanes. It isn't clear if speed was the issue here anyway. Seems more like the driver was not fully in control.

In your (inexpert) opinion. Do you think a 1 way street is (generally) more or less safe than a 2 way?
