So that's where the term 'put your money where your mouth is' came from.

Not found anywhere that states the origin of the tallow, does anyone know what animal it is sourced from?
Tallow is a rendered form of beef or mutton fat, processed from suet. It is solid at room temperature. Wikipedia
Thanks, every day a school day;-)
Except that may not be 100% the case unless they now separate the different waste and render it seprately.

IIRC sheep with a fleece blocked things up and cats produced a different fat but I personally saw everything from Elelephants / whales as well as domestic animals go through the process but admittedly this was pre BSE / CJD so may have changed now.

This gives the general gist of things.

An old anecdote but not sure how true:

old people say fish & chips don't taste like they did may be due to a massive reduction in the use / rendering of horses.
More likely because the majority of chippies use vegetable vat now rather than beef dripping as they used to.

The Mrs works for the company that develops and produces the aforementioned bank notes and other plastic films.

Tallow is frequently used in many of their plastic and polymer products, especially the clear films and packaging for foods.

It gives me great pleasure to imagine a vegan opening their plastic packet of chopped fresh fruit from the supermarket, and consuming it, while unbeknown to them, the packaging it came in contains a small amount of meat product....

Why would this give you "great pleasure"? Unless said vegan had personally caused you some kind of grief I fail to understand why you would feel such smug glee from a strangers misfortune.

It's a all a bit 'small man' isn't it?

Disagree. I have a close family member who wafts between red meat/anything goes, then white meat only, then fish, then veggie, then full vegan with (horrid) veggie shoes, every year or so. Sometimes the excuses are for health reasons, sometimes for not wanting to be horrid to animals. I love him to bits, but its 'hippy' ridiculous hypocrisy at its worst & seems to confuse his kids & missus. I can understand someone not eating meat due to allergies, but FFS, do people really eat plastic packaging or fivers?? Even if they used alternative materials, the animal by-products would still be there, but just wastefully thrown away instead....

The vegans who aren't happy with this should take the Bank of England to court and suet.

Calm yourself. I was just attempting to be slightly humerous in the style of Schadenfreude.

The bit I wasn't joking about was that plastics for food wrappers contain animal fat.

Each to his own, if a person does, or does not want to eat meat, that is entirely down to them, and `their' life preferences.
What gets a bit tiresome is where a person, or persons try to force their preferences on to others.
I read a thread, where a vegan was trying to stop people from eating meat, and to back his position, claimed that all humans were actually vegetarians.
In reply it was suggested to him, that he goes to the nearest mirror, and smiles at it. with the question, `Notice anything about your teeth? smile

Where is the outrage? A 1000 signature petition and some twitter moans isn't a raised eyebrow compared to the average Lewis vs Nico fanboy spat every race, let alone the concern over the recent Snoopers Charter from our illustrious overlords.

I'm sure that Vegans don't like the fact that animal products are used in notes and would prefer it to be otherwise. But I'm equally sure they're used to living in a world where every other thing has used animal products in some way.

So in other words, it's another BS Daily Mail non-story to get a bunch of us sneering at another bunch of us.

Strange how you reference the Daily Mail, when this was reported in most newspapers? It seems that you are the only one trying to get us to sneer at others.

Indeed it is an above board petition. I subscribe to these petitions and got invited to sign the other day.

Fair play if you choose to avoid animal products, even an idiot would have realised it was a dumbass idea to use animal products in notes..
Do you think the idea to include animal products was deliberate, just to ps off the veggie crowd?

OR

Do you think it was decided during the months/years of R&D and probably millions spent, that this ingredient is essential for the product to work correctly.

I've said this elsewhere, but almost everything you come into contact on a daily basis has some form of animal product in it. Your car, your mobile phone, your Debit/Credit cards.

Vegans need to either accept that the animal products are used where no other artificial or plant-based version exists or is practical (either from a cost or application point of view), -OR- they give up everything that includes animal products until such time a vegan-friendly alternative is available.

Unfortunately they 'choose' to compromise only in areas that would adversely affect them.

"I refuse to use anything that contains animal products because of my ethical stance (unless by not using said product it reduces my quality of life!)"

I wonder how many other countries with plastic notes use the same, they have had them in the IOM for yonks and Australia, I am sure there are many more.

A veggie friend of mine first brought the Change petition to my attention and was very vocal about it until I point out that he lives in NZ and they've had notes make out of the same material since 1999.
