They've given him until noon on Friday.
Just saw that, the generals don't want any agro and will just step to one side. It's such a vast contrast to east AfricaThe UN hasn't done a thing.
It is the African Union ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African_Union ) That has pulled the countries together and making this go though with the absolute minimum of bloodshed possible.
UN = Useless unless you want a press release.

I wonder what the furthest distance from a boarder is in Gambia, a few 100 miles at most?
About 20 miles at most. The border was based on how far a ship could fire its cannon from the river and to FN2.
I didn't look it up but just remembered it's long and narrow - don't realise quite that narrow though!
So in reality he didn't have to leave them there and do a runner. A couple of days hard walking (if no car about) and they could be relatively safely in a neighbouring country awaiting his call...

There would have been buses running and taxis, the ferries could have got them well away. I really don't think there is anything to run from, with the Senegalese army there and local military not wanting a scrap it'll be fine
The local military is nothing to speak of! And Jammeh more than once in the past has refused to pay them....you'd think that would incite a coup...not in a country where you're lucky to earn a $1 a day. The air force used to consist of one fighter jet which is kept at Banjul airport at the end of the runway...didn't look very airworthy when I was there about 15 years ago. Pilot was an alcoholic from one of the former Soviet states. Here's a picture of the plane

That's what it looked like when I saw it...so it's probably not airworthy now....and the pilots probably in the pub

So he's going to step down...my guess is he's done a deal to take his ill gotten gains and is off to Mauritania. Give it a year and the ICC will be after him.

Looks like Jammeh is holed up in his palace and the Senegal troops will try and pressure him to leave quietly. The head of the Gambian army has indicated he does not want to defend Jammeh.
