Give working women "Menstrual Leave".

Recently introduced laws in parts of China allow women to take one or two days paid leave at certain periods of the month. There are calls for this idea to become more widespread. BBC clicky
We have a similar concept in my company, women can take a few days or weekshere and there as they see fit, men can do the same, it's called annual leave.
it would be mental if that happened over here, we have enough loaning in our office about the woman who has an hour a day off for her cigarette breaks, if she had a few days extra each month we'd have a mutiny!

IMO It will do women in general no favours.
Imagine such a law exists; you are sitting on the interview panel and, you actually care about company productivity and profitability.
Which do you choose for your new team that's under pressure?
The man who is not able to take paid days off whenever he fancies it? OR
The woman who could, remembering; just like the "how old are you?" and "are you planning to have children soon?" questions, you can't ask their opinions or intentions.
Application form questions:
Any pre-existing medical conditions that may affect your ability to perform the job you are applying for?
If so, provide details.

Surely women need to stand up against this kind of thing?

The problem is that women are not all the same. Some women are very career minded and this sort of thing is a hindrance - there is an unspoken issue, a little niggle in the back of the mind, with employing women under the age of 40 because of the likelihood that circumstances will change and the law requires businesses to attempt to adapt to that.
But for a lot of women it's great because it allows them an easy way back into the workplace.

To be fair it does say they "can take a day or two a month off work if they suffer from period pain.". Lots of people take days off sick if they suffer from severe pain arising from a chronic health condition.
In which case - existing sickness legislation already covers it, no special rules required.Where I work - time taken off sick that is associated with a pre-existing chronic condition doesn't count towards the absence trigger.

I was thinking more in terms of women that are strongly career focussed or in specialised professions.
