Amazon unveils plans for grocery shop with no checkouts
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-38212818

Amazon has revealed plans for a grocery shop without a checkout process, where customers will instead pay for the goods they have selected via an app.

woohoo

Can't happen soon enough!!

Funnily enough the mrs told me this morning that she did pretty much exactly that last time she was in Waitrose yesterday.
Apparently you scan something on your phone when you go in, scan each item on to your phone and then scan something when you leave and pay.
I suppose its only a matter of time until they make it so you can pay on the app too

Looking forward to seeing how this works with the lovable promising young models, celebrities and footballers who might forget to scan a few items from time to time whilst concentrating on furthering their education and job prospects.

Oddly enough Tesco have been doing it for years, albeit with their scanners. Pick up a scanner, put things directly in your bag, self check out in a minute or two.

I guess phone addicts might save a few seconds but it's hardly significant progress is it?

I had this app, but it refused to work at the checkout once I had scanned everything (so it had to be all redone the old fashioned way).

Thought it was due to having an older phone and version of android, but it won't even start up on the latest version of android on my new phone. Very annoying in a first world problem sort of way.

Nice idea though

I had this so many times with the "old" Waitrose card, scan system that it just got tedious - and more frustrating than queuing with all the other plebs.... smash

The problem with the Waitrose App is that you need a strong and constant connection, with is not easy in a huge building like a supermarket. So you cannot rely on mobile signal, you need to hop onto their wifi. But it's not always that stable, especially if their are lots of customers doing likewise. Also, I don't think it's time saving if you are on your own. Time saved in not queuing at the checkout is lost by scanning and waiting of the app to update. However, if there are 2 of you shopping, it's much quicker, as one can browse the aisles and collect the goods whilst the other packs and scans.

However, unlike self-checkouts, there is no "unexpected item in the baggage area", as there is no way the app knows what you have put in your bags but not scanned. I guess Waitrose assume they have a more honest customer base....

I remember talk of a fully RFID shopping experience whereby no scanning at all was required.

Walk in. Pick up stuff from shelves. Walk out.

All items logged and billed automatically, shame Amazon couldn't manage an experience closer to this.

It's a badly worded article. The app will get you into the store. The store will then track what you've picked up from the shelves and placed in your bag - no scanning required. Then, when you leave, you will be automatically billed for the produce.

How is the Amazon experience different?

From what I've seen, you only scan your phone as you enter the shop, after which you put away your phone and whatever you select is automatically added to your account as you pick items from the shelves.

Maybe this will help:

Doesn't everyone do this already at self-serve tills? Seems fair enough to get a "discount" if you're doing their job for them.

Thanks for that!

Mrs Beano immediately went: ...."yeah, but, no, but ... then you have to go back into the store and say 'oi, this on my receipt isn't mine'..." irked

Don't Amazon already have an app where you can deliver those wherever you want - same day idea

Exactly - It's not like you have to check the merchandise before you buy - a can of custard is a can of custard and if you are buying frozen sausages to hammer into a lawn it only matters that the are sausages and frozen.

There goes more unskilled jobs from the econonomy. What are those who typically take such jobs going to do?

It's an important question that becomes more relevant as companies use continue to use technology to fulfil the often competing business aims of more profit / lower prices.
