He did wrong. We're supposed to be better than that.

It's that simple.
That sums it up for me.
the guy was a enemy combatant in a war zone st happens!

still he has his 72 virgins now.
st happens indeed, but war zone or no war zone, our forces have a code of conduct to uphold.

If they aren't going to behave like British soldiers then what's the point?

For those of you that think he did nothing wrong as the Taliban are barbaric, where do we draw the line?

They used a 10yr old child in a suicide bombing, therefore we're Ok shooting a 12yr old?

We have RoE's to maintain our high standards, the standards that separate us from them & make us better than them, let those standards slip and what do we have?

Unfortunately for this particular Marine, his actions were recorded unknown to him, now it is in the public domain an example has to be made of him, partly to deter anybody else, partly to send a message to the world that we are better than this.

He's not the 1st, he won't be the last. Doesn't make it right.

The main difference here is that it was recorded & is now in the public domain, he cannot be seen to get away with murder. If it wasn't recorded, nobody would ever have known.

No it doesnt. There are rules which must be adhered to otherwise we are no better than them.

You may think that, but the law, our armed forces, and Geneva convention disagrees with you.

There are no excuses for it.

Our standards have to be higher than others.

So if he captures an Isis female it's ok to rape her? By your logic it's fine.

Rules are there for a reason & are to be followed, even when the folks involved want to do whatever they like.

eta- If he'd said "This is doing him a kindness" before shooting him I might have taken a more generous POV, but his act was pure malice.

What, and risk the possibility of a grenade with the pin out under the body?

If they had believed he was still a threat to them they would have shot him from a safe distance before approaching him, they would have been justified in doing so.

This thread will go the same way as all the others. People that have been in the armed forces will say you should abide by the rules, people who have never served will say you should be free to murder.

Professional soldier know the rules, that's why we're better at it.

You mean like Royal Marines Lt Colonel Oliver Lee, 45 Commando's commanding officer, who resigned his commission in protest over this case? Is that who you mean?

Except when it's recorded on tape and brought home.

To be pedantic a very small proportion think its ok. Every similar thread on this ends the same way. MOST Serving and ex-forces back the rules.

I'm ex-forces and I think he was wrong to do what he did.

I haven't read much, but the guy was fired upon and he killed one of the insurgents at close range.

You put anyone in a kill or be killed situation, don't be surprised if they don't always act rationally.

I hope ISIS are court martialing their guys.
ISIS are a terrorist organization, this chap was in the British Army.
FFS! He's a MARINE! Marines are in the NAVY!

Jesus wept. What a bunch of Manginas the men of this country are when they don't even know basic st like that.

Didn't the Taliban hang bits of his dead mates from nearby trees? I'd humbly suggest that would be enough to raise the pulse rate of someone holding a loaded pistol near to one of the perpetrators.
If we call them barbarians then we can't in the next breath say "well they do it, so why can't we?".

Why not?

Being 'better than them' hasn't proved very successful so far.
