I am looking to get my son a laptop for Christmas. Being on a tight budget I have a maximum of £150 to spend + a bit of P+P, therefore I want a good secondhand one, I have looked at HP pavilion G6 and G62 but they all seem to have different specs some have 1.9 GHZ others have 2.4 GHZ some have 1 Tb of memory others 320 GB's I'm not the best with computers, basically what I'm asking is can any of you chaps point me in the right direction to a good laptop for around this mark, windows 10 would be preferable but you can upgrade to that for free if it's on older windows can't you? Any make of laptop is OK but the better spec the better. He will be using it for school work and the like but I think he will want it fast with a bit of storage. Thank you very much in advance.smile

Couple of new Lenovo lappies for that budget at Argos.

Go to £180 and the MIIX 2 in 1 is a nifty bit of kit, the lad is getting one for homework duties this christmas.

I recently bought a Dell E6510 for £155 - it's an i5 with 500gb HDD and 4gb RAM.

It's chunky though.

My advice is to avoid the new Lenovo tablets / laptops - the construction is really flimsy (I just sold mine - 10 months old / looked after but falling to bits).

You really cannot go wrong with a 2nd hand Dell off Ebay (of which there are plenty at your budget - and avoid Windows 10).

Here's a custom search on Ebay

Search criteria was Dell Laptop / UK only / £85 to £150 budget.

755 laptops to choose from.

Just watch out for the odd spares / repair they may have sneaked into the search...

Watch out for the HP stuff (particularly the Pavilion range) - there are some nice HP laptops out there, but a lot of them tend to suffer from poor contrast.

Battery life: also note that most auction vendors will state how much battery life is left, so check for that too, is running on battery is important to you.

Also - read a review on any potential purchase before buying - because most of these have been around for a couple of years now, any potential issues have been highlighted too.

EDIT: I note you are confused about "memory".

RAM is memory that your programs and operating system run in - and is typically 4gb to 8gb in a laptop (2gb is not enough).

Disk space is also measured in GB - and this is where you will see anything ranging from 128gb to 1Tb - anything larger than 256gb is adequate.

An SSD (solid state disk) is a bonus - however you are unlikely to find a used (or even a new low end) laptop with an SSD.

Most of the Dells (as are other brands) on Ebay are ex corporate laptops.

For editing documents, spreadsheets etc. you can use LibreOffice which is free.

We've used these guys at work...

The ones we've had (IBM) look like new and have a 6 month warranty.
