Its a massive problem. Yesterday radio 4 was interviewing the editor of buzzfeed about this. Were they saying that he was partly to blame? No he was there as one of the good guys publishing credible news apparently. Either i missed the sarcasm of the issues is much bigger than i thought for that pile of st click-bait website to be 'credible news'
Buzzfeed are the pits. The new Gawker. It was them who published the "Golden showers" Trump dossier that was patently bks, so much so it had been doing the rounds for 6 months. They needed to get a dig in the day before his first speech. They are fake news and should be treated as such.

I've just seen this on the BBC website.

My understanding is that Farage is telling the truth. Yet the insinuation from the way its presented is that he is lying. The article doesn't say. Either way I feel this just contributes to the whole 'fake news ' issue, it isn't fake but it clearly can't be trusted at face value.

All news is agenda driven now, rather than merely reporting facts. That's the problem. The only way I feel I can be properly informed is to follow a mix of biased left and right wings sources, and try to make up my own mind.

I've horribly edited your post for comic effect, in case that isn't clear.

But there is a large amount of truth in it too. All our mainstream media lie to us, all the time. They are all publishing fake news.

I had to laugh at CH4 news saying they were going to do a feature on fake news, there is no real need though as they could just continue with their currently broadcasted "opinion" that they dress up as The News.

They do at least have enough sense of humour to remind us that The Day Today is available on catchup !

The original fake news comedy...

Someone had to be really bored to put that much effort into writing such a big article about such a tiny thing.

It was stupid but surely the only ones who noticed or cared are the ones getting upset, I doubt anyone else even listens to the people spouting this rubbish.

Quite a lot of people (admittedly quite gullible) will have nodded their heads and accepted what she said at face value, possibly because it fits in with their beliefs. When people spout such rubbish it needs to be pointed out that they're spouting rubbish.

Do you really not think it matters if the Trump administration actually believes this sort of stuff or if they just say it anyway?

The boss of Apple wants us to tackle fake news like we did environmental issues.

telegraph said:
Tim Cook, the boss of Apple, is calling for governments to launch a public information campaign to fight the scourge of fake news, which is “killing people’s minds.”

In an impassioned plea, Mr Cook, boss of the world’s largest company, says that the epidemic of false reports “is a big problem in a lot of the world” and necessitates a crackdown by the authorities and technology firms.

In an exclusive interview with The Daily Telegraph, he calls for a campaign similar to those that changed attitudes on the environment to educate the public on the threat posed by fabricated online stories.

Maybe the concept of fake news is fake news to soften us all up for more control of the real news!
But how would we know? . smile

It will take the public deciding to act to fix fake news. Everyone needs to be a moderator to deal with the sheer volume of bullst.

Maybe Facebook should introduce a "Bullst" reaction. Enough bullsts and the post gets hidden forever.

Of course people would misuse that, too.

Fox news is akin to The Daily Sport . As was said in an earlier post all news reports are media driven/biased hence the UK love for Obama when in reality he did very little aside from his abysmal health care act and failure to reform gun control .Trump despite what you've read is a breath of fresh air in the land of the stupid , no PC bullst , he could be talking to a mate over coffee when he makes his speeches , and moreover he stands behind his commitments (rightly or wrongly). He might not be the Devil the BBC would have you believe . Justin fking Trudeau on the other ........................... na ,not starting on about that prick .

Call me alarmist...but when there's enough of a ruckus over both fake news and hate speech (as per Diane Abbott's litany of filth she has been receiving since her brave and principled stance in the HoC last week) then how can the government NOT step in and help their needy populus by severely censoring t'net?

It'll be for our own good, naturally, and only those who wish to promote hate and division could possibly object to a benign state oversight operation removing all that contentious crud from the cloud.

Perhaps in another five years. Watch this space. /tinfoilhatmode

A fake paper published in The Lancet claimed a causative link between the MMR vaccine and Autism. The papers got the story. It spread, despite it being bullst.

That particular piece of bullst led to a huge drop in the number of kids being immunised against measles. The percentage dropped below the level needed for "herd immunity" apparently.

That snippet courtesy of Radio 4 this evening and also here: http://www.bmj.com/content/342/bmj.c7452

Fake news really is damaging.
