I had the misfortune of living in the Potteries for 6 months back in the day. It was horrendous. The ceramic industry was dying and it felt like the community was dying with it. I wasn't at all surprised that the Stokies voted so heavily for Leave - they clearly believe they haven't got much left to lose.

For the same reason, I think they will elect the Kipper at the by-election.

Personally, I think the Tories could edge it, dependent entirely on how May fares with Trump this week.

The one leader who will be 'finished' if he doesn't win, is Corbyn.

If Ukip comes second, as in the GE, Nuttal will be far from finished.

Corbyn's troubles will be far, far worse if Labour loses this seat and the other by-election in Copeland.
The Tories will never win in Stoke, ever !
Stoke on Trent Central was won by Hunt, but Ukip only beat the tories by about 30 votes.

In the other two Stoke constituencies the tories came second in each losing only by around a few thousand votes in both. Ukip was third in those two, both very close to the Tories votes.
Will be no surprise if Labour lose Central next month. I did say it depends how May gets on with Trumpy. If she comes back home with a good deal, a lot of kippers might vote tory just to see off labour. Stranger things have happened. And are happening!

Any chance Tories might vote UKIP to give Corbyn a bloody nose?

As has been said, the fact local candidates have been ignored before doesn't do the various parties any favours. Stick a local in and people will vote for them.
Labour and UKIP look like splitting the vote which does give the Tories a chance (despite the fact that nobody votes Tory because of thatcher and the mines)
Really can't see stoke central (lived within sight of the mp surgery so like to think I know the area a little) voting for a scouser (no offence meant, love Liverpool but how would you all feel if asked to vote for a manc?)

I would think, under current conditions, a bloody nose for UKiPs would be preferable for the Torys.

Even upto 2005 I'd absolutely agree with you, we had our coal pits closed in the 80's, our ceramic industry was on on last legs and the place just reeked of decay. However in the past 10 years a huge amount of money has been pumped into Stoke with "traditional" Labour voters being priced out of living there or, due to most living in old terraced houses, having them compulsory purchased forcing them to leave. The "new" breed of Stoke's, away from the council estates, are UKIP/Tory voters as seen in recent election results with Labour numbers falling 28% and UKIP/Tory numbers rising. There's still a 16% Labour majority so it's not an "easy" win for UKIP but I wouldn't discount even the Tories winning in another 10-15 years.

It's "better" now due to the huge sums of money being spent there but TBH it feels like a long term disease suffer who is getting a a brief remission before the inevitable slide back into relapse when the money stops being pumped into it.

Great news. Both because it keeps Labour in chaos if UKIP win, and even if not it means that at least the Tories have accepted Brexit and broken the duopoly.

it would be slightly Ironic if Nutall wins a seat in Parliament after just a few months as leader when Nigel Farage never did manage to win a seat after many years of trying

Just how utterly useless and crap is the Labour party ? Nuttal has a 10 point lead in the first polling. When you are already behind the rolling calamity that is Ukip, you know you are a smelly turd of a party.

Maybe scrub that. The poll size was so tiny as to be near pointless.

I wonder if in light of recent events the UKIP vote will actually grow as people show their annoyance at the attempt to derail BREXIT.

Telegraph reporting that Labour have picked an ardent pro-immigration, anti-Brexit buffoon as their candidate! rofl

Nuttall needn't bother even campaigning now.

Worth reading Guido on Gareth 'man of the people' Snell:

https://order-order.com/people/gareth-snell/

He does however have Corbyn bang to rights as an 'IRA supporting, friend of Hamas career politician'.
