Depends who Labour put as their candidate. Jamie Reed was well respected on the whole, but if they parachute a Corbynite in it's not going to end well. However if they put a local, pro-nuclear candidate up, they will probably retain it.

Why no LibDems? Their leader's popular in that area isn't he? And wouldn't be far for him to help push his party...

That's South Lakeland, and saying Whitehaven is like Kendal, is a bit like saying Dagenham and Tower Hamlets are the same as they're in London.

It'll be blue or red, and depend on the Labour candidate. Simples.

I'll still be amazed if they vote anything other than red down there when push comes to shove.

Indeed.

I'm originally from the Copeland area and it's a classic "vote for a donkey if it has a red rosette on it" type place.

Just been reading a debate about this very matter on a Copeland Facebook group and one person posted that "it would be a cold day in Hell before they put a cross anywhere near a Conservative candidates name on a voting slip", and this idea seemed to be agreed with.

Not if their job depends on the Nuclear industry they won't.

Anyway if JC does get in and shut down Nuclear then there will indeed be many cold days.

Before it was renamed Copeland in 1983, the constituency was called Whitehaven. The boundaries of the constituency were unchanged when it was renamed.

This constituency has returned Labour MPS since 1935.
Yes, 1935 !
That's 81 years of loyal Labour support.

If Labour cannot win this bi-election, then they are surely doomed.

I mentioned this in another thread last month, but it's worthy of a repost

Not exactly true though - the Tory pig dog was only 2,600 votes behind in 2015 and Labour are massively unpopular with a great many people at the moment. Hardly a colossal majority to overturn.

Tory narrow win IMO

That will be quite something if it happens.

Mind you, it wouldn't be surprise me too much if Copeland inches towards the Conservatives. All the traditional industries have virtually gone (coal mines, iron ore, fishing, docks/harbour, soap powder production, factories, steelworks) and have been almost completely replaced by the enormous nuclear industry, which, from what I can ascertain, pays everyone £60k a year to do utterly mundane and basic tasks such as sweeping up or making tea.

The result is that Copeland is now incredibly 'New Money' and is a sea of white Range Rover Evoques on finance parked outside 3 bed semi's.

A politician once told my dad that "Sellafield has completely ruined a good workforce". And he was right. Whereas traditionally everyone had happily grafted in/on trawlers, mines, factories, docks etc, now none of them will get out of bed for less than £60k for a 35 hour week and 6 weeks holiday a year, oh, and the god given right to steal as much stuff from work as is humanly possible to carry out with you.

So yeah, the locals may want to distance themselves even further from their Trade Union past and vote Tory.

This makes them a "ruined workforce"? Because they're not doing "proper" jobs?

The jobs we all do will have changed markedly in the next 20yrs, just as the jobs you and I do now are likely very different to those 20yrs ago. It's just "change".

Really? What sort of stuff are they nicking?

I struggle to believe it's any worse than our nationalised, over-union'd industries were in the 70s.

That sounds reasonably similar to here in Aberdeen, but now the tide has gone out and we're seeing who has been swimming naked.

Labour. I don't think they are as dead as the media would like to think. Plus now perhaps they are being thought of as the underdog.

UKIP. Why do they exist anymore? We ARE going independent regardless of who wants it or not.

I honestly don't know where to begin with further explaining sellafield. The stories about the place are simply staggering. I'll try to reply in detail later when I finish work.

Not being local to the area and not knowing the stories, I'm genuinely interested...assuming it's substance driven smile

Just seen the main candidates on the DP, what a bunch of deadheads, Tory was the worst. Labour one came across as not bad. UKiPs was OK too. Don't see the LD one doing well, but I'll be rather interested to see the only anti-nuclear candidate, the Green, how he does. biggrin

I see no one on here voted Green. Personally I have never really seen the point of them.
