Hi all,

Need a little help. Looking at buying an A4 Avant 09 plate onwards, s line spec less then £7500. Theres an automatic for sale i like with 189,000 miles on? Is it worth it? or do i grab a manual with less miles on?

Thanks,

wemorgan

Nope, not to me it isn't.
The fact that you're unsure is a sign that many others would be too, you'd struggle to sell it on for any decent money.

for £750 .. go for it.
For £7,500 .. not a chance.

All that will happen is someone will buy it.. clock it, then sell it for alot more

I would suggest that the thick end of 200k miles means the car is coming to the end of its useful life.

At the very minimum, you're going to be looking at a couple of big bills in the next 12-24 months with a car of that mileage.

I'd be looking at cars around the 120k mark.

£7,500 sounds strong for an 8yo A4 anyway, let alone with 190k on it.

My Scirocco is at 176k.
It's tuned to within an inch of it's life - Stock 164bhp/275ft lb. Currently 255bhp and 435ft lb.
Soon to be over 300bhp and 500ft lb.

It's been a pinnacle of reliability.
My only breakdown was a clutch pipe let go (upgraded clutch more strain on hydraulics).
The only non-servicing part it's required was a shift linkage (and that was due to my short shift kit).
It doesn't burn water or oil. Still returns 50mpg even with the engine tuning.

If you drive it and it feels good then there's no reason at all why it wouldn't last.
Assuming it's a common rail diesel they are strong engines with very few major faults, parts are cheap if you bother to look on Ebay etc.

TFSI's are equally reliable.

I would probably bargain a bit off, maybe closer to £6k, but no reason to not. Assuming it's been well serviced and looked after.
That mileage suggests it's been sat on a motorway for most of it's life which is ultimately where the least wear and tear occurs. I'd rather have a 150k car that's done 80% motorway mileage than a 75k car that's spend it's life doing stop start journeys around town taking the kids to school.

I do agree, just needed some more opinions smile
On average the cars im looking at have around 120,000 miles on anyway. Appreciate the feedback.

And I would suggest you're wrong. I don't doubt that some bills may be looming (which would even happen at half the mileage) but it's by no means done.

OP - too much money for the miles and age. A friend has an Avant 2.0 TDI 143 S-Line 2009 09 and only paid £6700 for it with 85k miles...and that was about a year ago.

There are plenty out there so you can afford to be picky - I would recommend the SE instead also rides a lot nicer.

Needs to be a bit cheaper but no reason not to buy a high miles car if it's a nice clean well maintained car. Resale will be difficult and budget for some larger bills along the way and avoid ever taking it to a main dealer or over priced specialist .

Just thinking, what's people's thought on the VW Passat sport 2012 onwards? compared to the A4?

If you want it then get it but I'd have a look around as it is high mileage.

Some post 2009 auto diesel estate alternatives:

E280 Estate 40k FSH (this is a Cat D) but if you were interested in a 190k Avant this could be worth consideration.

The Audi a4 post 2009 is the facelift model hence looks new, has the new dash etc but they drive like a crappy old Passat tdi, you'd be far better off with something like this 2007 330d - more miles, cheaper, but drives 200% better than a regular A4 avant.

I recently sold a 2010 Avant 2.0 diesel low miles fsh big spec and it was a horrible thing to drive, was shocked how bad it was, Audi are so far behind BMW when it comes to how they drive.

I use to have a 63 plate 1 series sport. Drove beautifully. Now have v60 D3 estate but it doesn't excite me. I know an estate won't be the same as a hatch but I'm open to any suggestions.
Need an estate, due to family and dogs, and has to be diesel as I cover around 20,000 miles a year.
Thanks guys
