I am surprised this was missed yesterday.
Does she not realise that Brexit was about immigration, but as she looks to be over 30 she is probably way past her intellectual peak...

They are urged to learn English, by that same professor. You picked a really bad example with Spain, as most of the zimmer-frame brigade can't speak Spanish to save their lives (oh and some are actually very proud that they can't).
All in all, random goody-two-shoes says something, Daily mail picks it up knowing that dimwits will get all angry and stuff about it.

I presume the dimwits reading the Guardian are too dim to get all angry and stuff about it ....

Spanish is a good example as its just about as popular world wide as English. Mandarin and Hindi/Urdu obviously top the chart. All in all, random goody-two-shoes says something, Daily mail picks it up knowing that dimwits will get all angry and stuff about it.

“Considering the issue from the point of view of language learning, we rightly expect immigrants to learn English but, as a nation, we often don’t see the need ourselves to learn another language, and consider it to be something difficult and only for the intellectual elite.
“I would like to see more opportunities for British people to learn some of the community languages of the UK, such as Polish, Punjabi and Urdu, particularly in areas where there are high numbers of those speakers, so that there is some mutual effort in understanding the others’ language and culture.”

There's no point learning anything another language.
The Foreign won't be allowed in any more(because stealing our jobs), the ones that are here will be sent back, and as the value of the pound drops, you won't be able to afford to go abroad.
That's a great impression of the more moaning end of the PH remain voter. The Foreign won't be allowed in any more(because stealing our jobs), the ones that are here will be sent back, and as the value of the pound drops, you won't be able to afford to go abroad.
Her views on Europe are very balanced compared to other Cambridge professors. I'll just put his down very carefully, tiptoe out of the room, and close the door quietly behind me: http://www.cambridge-news.co.uk/news/cambridge-new...

Yes, the quality of someone's intellect should always be based on how they look. That's why I've never listened to Prof Hawkins, the shrivelled little munchkin. So i really don't care what crackpot stuff she says.

I think his angle is that it's a bit like food...if it's not well presented you're not as inclined to eat it. Unless you're very hungry.
Anyway, quit being so PC. His wasn't the funniest of irreverent posts, but life would be very dull if we ruled out all the off-message stuff.
I could see that if you lived in an area of the UK where there are a lot of people who don't speak English as their first language learning some of their tongue could come in very useful.
Please, Thank you, fk off etc.
What I do find amusing however is the double standard of the stereotypical British person abroad (holiday or economic migrant like me) who doesn't learn a fking word of the language and just speaks louder and slower while expecting foreigners to be fluent in English when in the UK.
Please, Thank you, fk off etc.

Holidaymakers abroad shouldn't expect the locals to speak English however it may well be in the interests of the locals to learn English for the tourism dollars. English speaking Economic migrants abroad should definitely learn the local language. Please, Thank you, fk off etc.

The same benefits of learning Urdu/Polish/Romanian/Arabic/(insert language of choice) aren't present for people in this country. There is no great tourism from the countries we receive most of our migrants from. English is the international language of business to boot so unless you are actively trading with another country there isn't a great deal of value in learning another language (especially one of the languages listed above).
