Hi all , it's been 7 years since our last bulldog passed away. We have had no other pets since. We bought a beautiful bulldog puppy on Monday but since bringing him home we are suffering. My throat swells after making a fuss of him and my wife and daughter have been suffering allergic symptoms. It's all rather uncomfortable and very worrying. We are already smitten with the little guy and really do not want to return home to the breeders. I have never had a reaction to a dog before this and neither has my wife . Any good advice you can offer, we have bathed him twice in 4 days , we have no carpets (tiled floors throughout). I am really concerned.

Give him a completely thorough wash a couple of times to ensure it is nothing carried over from the breeder.

Bit of a bugger if it isn't something like that.

Edited: ibsee that you have bathed him.

Take antihistamine for a couple of days then try without.

If it continues i suppose it is up to you whether you can put up with it or you are prepared to take a tablet every day.

Someone I know is very allergic to my Bulldog, she takes (?) antihistamine to keep it in check.

I dont really want to be taking antihistamines , I don't understand how we can all have become allergic at the same time when we never had issues beforemail with any previous dogs.

I am allergic to all sorts of animals other than dogs - and I live on a smallholding with all sorts.

Every so often I get a reaction and take antihistamines for a couple of days and then I am back to normal.

Got to be worth a go if you want to give the pup a chance.

I cannot speak for its efficacy, but there is a product called PetAlCleanse which is supposed to help with allergies. You would need to check whether it can be used on very young puppies though.

We bought some shampoo from Pets at home which they say might help so I have given him yet another bath in that. They don't sell Petal cleanse unfortunately, anyone know where I can source some to give it a try ? He is about the 18 weeks old so should hopefully be ok with it. I don't mind using antihistamines short term I just don't want it to be a daily thing .

Petalcleanse worth a try, my friend used it on her cats when her boyfriend reacted to them.

What I would hope is this is temporary, use histimines for a short time, wean off them see.

My friends now husband reacted really badly to her cats I initially but after a bit of time he was fine and lived with them without an issue.

Fingers crossed!

Just be careful not to overbathe your pup that may inadvertently create skin issues especially in a bulldog pup.

I suppose it could be fleas or some other form of infestation.

But in the meantime you really should be taking the tablets.

Get him checked by a vet and if needed skin scrapes. I hope someone is fussing and comforting him though!

It's not fleas or such , he has come from a very well respected bulldog breeder and is in great condition. He doesn't scratch himself and gives no indication of any kind of illness.

As per Bex above, it may not be fleas but it may be another parasite that you happen to allergic to.

Worth inspecting before you have to give him up.

Not suggesting anything about the breeder and their standards just covering all possibilities. And if you can't keep him, tell the breeder. Good breeders will take their pups back.

Started taking antihistamines yesterday , will try them for a few days and see how it goes. My eyes are pretty swollen and sore this morning.

The wife today has swollen lips with sores, swollen eyes and puffy face and blood coming from her nose when she blows it. She's taking antihistamines, how severe a reaction is this normal or extreme. I spoke to the breeder he suggested seeing a doctor I think I know what a doctor is going to say...we are gutted. Any vets here who may be able to offer some advice?

That sounds really bad and not something that can continue.

I have never heard of a whole family reacting to one dog before, especially when they've had pets before, never in 26yrs, it is really bizarre.

Nothing to do with any pet food/ treats that you have all handled?

I can't help feeling that pup should go back to breeder today, just for a few days maybe and see if your symptoms are relieved, then you have an answer but not a mice one frown

It is a very severe reaction, you should take photos to show the breeder as well.
