Must say I wouldn't really fancy living there however it was quite a groundbreaking scheme back in the 1960's and it seems that it is never to be repeated.

Image what building another new town on on similar scale would do for the UK now: put a big dent in the housing shortfall, ease our immigration pressures, create loads of jobs, boost the economy, etc. Just a shame nobody seems to be that forward thinking anymore.
Sensible post.So much land is privately owned and politicians have no vision just rhetoric.

I like Milton Keynes.

Sure, it's soulless but that's only because of a lack of history, 'modern' buildings and grid like structure (which I actually like). It's a fantastic place to drive when there isn't traffic - so easy to learn around those parts. Lots of green spaces, trees, villages and towns nearby and it's between Oxford and Cambridge. It also has decent shops, albeit large chains though - also lakes, canals, lots of routes for cycling too.

The houses are decent size - well, compared to places like London. £500k actually gets you a big house and not some pokey flat next to a busy road unlike London. Lots of places to work, some tech companies around there and not forgetting quite a few F1 teams since it's close to Silverstone too.

Every place has good and bad parts, so it's unfair to judge a place on the 'rough' area. Unless of course it's Bradford or Hull - now that's a sthole.

There are quite a few 'chavs' in MK but far more normal people - nothing to really worry about. Not like god awful Luton by any means.

Born and bred. Newport Pagnell during childhood, then in MK, now on outskirts. wavey

It's still the only major town/city I can think where I can drive from one side, through the middle, to the other side without getting stuck in traffic or on a stupid one-way system.
Not in rush hour, but it's possible during the day.

I like it. I wouldn't live close to the centre on some of the estates, but it's nice in the outlying villages.

Good transport links, plenty of parkland and 40 mins drive from Silverstone smile

40 Minutes? Do you stop halfway for 20 minutes or something? hehe

I live over near the Dons stadium and can be at the circuit in 15 minutes, less if I really go for it, just make sure you dont go in via the A43 but through Whittlebury wink

Unless you are driving there in an f1 car, this is fantasy land. That route was my commute for many years.

Err no it isn't, it's 18 miles door to door for me, A5 to A413 takes 10 minutes (less with the lights in your favour). Last hop through Whittlebury takes 5..

Not doable in rush hour I grant you but on a Saturday afternoon very possible just needs a bit of driving

Yep 15-20 mins if you go via Whittlebury is perfectly reasonable.

The A5 trunk road is nice and free flowing outside of rush hour.

Hellhole. I absolutely despise the place.

Worked there for several years before seeing the light, taking a substantial pay cut and coming home to good old Yorkshire.
I do not miss it in the slightest.
Haha wondered if I'd see you in this thread Mr.P

Don't fancy coming back then haha.

As per the Guardian article, MK seems to divide opinion. People either love it or hate it.

One thing's for sure -- MK has the best road and cycle network in the UK, probably Europe, and possibly the world. That alone should make it a PH favourite driving

Pretty much one of the worst estates in the city. Shame as the houses are huge!
If they were bought up by some modernist developer and tarted up couldnt they be listed for one of those architecture of the year awards for box and glass structures?
